On 2006-06-15, Big Dave rated this Pinnacle Exception 2006 a 5...(7121)
Purchase: The first time I bought the Exception was at a big golf shop in greater Los Angeles. I bought a sleeve (3) for $4.49. I picked up this ball with several sleeves of other balls to try out and compare. I went looking for a better ball than the Top Flights my game had always been worthy of, to go along with my better play of late.
Pros: Everything. They say most avid golfers have 2 balls they play. (1) The inexpensive ball for everyday play and practice rounds, and (2) a more expensive ball for bigger-deal rounds. i.e. Noodle and ProV1. For me, the Nike Ignite is my ball of choice for meaningful rounds. I can't spend top shelf $$ on a ball in good conscience, (my grandfather's voice echoes in my head about spending more than 20 dollars for a dozen balls...ever) so 25 bucks a dozen and I can sleep at night. Since more of my rounds are for fun, and losing balls is part of life, I wanted an even lower-cost ball that was good for everyday.
So, I have tried 'em all. Mojo, Loco, SoLo, XL-3000, Noodle, AD333, Big Bertha, you get the idea. The $14-$18 range of balls/dzn.
The new Exception IS the exception! It is hands-down the best 2-piece ball I've ever tried. I NEVER would have tried it, it is a Pinnacle after all. Great distance has never been a problem for Pinnacle, nor have they been accused of being anything other than rocks...but I thought, why not? ...and here I am writing a long review of a PINNACLE!
The first time I bought them, the guy says to me, 'Our Titleist rep, who I've known for 15 years, says that for the money, this is the best ball they've ever made.' He's right.
Great distance, not overly spinny, and can check up on greens. I backed it up! It feels better than any other 2-piece, distance-type ball I've ever hit, on tees and off the putter face. It rolls so much more true on greens, and is anything but jumpy or too hot, when compared to all the others. It doesn't balloon like some, it doesn't rocket off the putter face randomly, and it holds a line (on the green and in the wind) extremely well. Like I said...can't believe I like a Pinnacle this much.
Cons: Nothing yet.
Quality: Brilliant white finish, great color inks, 1st rate. Extremely durable too. They last!
Review Summary: Bottom line:
I found my less-expensive ball. Though my more expensive ball is not way more expensive, this one is the one I'll use day in and day out. This ball outperforms most every ball in the $23-$29 range. Overall, it beats HX Hot, Hogan Hawk, Bertha, Mojo, Red Max, NXT, which all cost more.
In it's own price range, $13-$18, it is the exception. I swear I don't work for them. In fact I don't like Titleist much at all. But this is great.
