On 2004-06-16, Paul Stefano rated this PowerBilt TPS 8.0 Irons a 5...(3777)
Purchase: I acquired these clubs from Golfdiscount.com in a package deal that included a Powerbilt stand bag. I paid $399 for a 4-SW set. I've always been a huge fan of the brand. I bought a set of Grand Slam Irons back in 1997 after a blind test of about 10 manufacturer's irons. I still love those clubs, but given the advances in technology over the past few years, I decided it was time to upgrade. So I bought the newest Powerbilt model, the TPS 8.0 irons
Pros: First of all, I love Powerbilt's customer service. I purchased a driver years ago, and broke the head off, twice. Powerbilt has a lifetime guarantee on their clubs, and they replaced my driver both times, no questions asked.
As for the TPS 8.0, I just got them and played one round so far. It will take me some time to get used to them, as they are a little different than my Grand Slams. First impressions, though, are amazing. I hit one ball with the 7 iron that was incredible. I took the biggest divot of my life, and yet the ball just took off, higher and higher to the fringe from about 150 away. On another hit, I hit my 4 iron 190 yards. My old set required I use a 3 iron for that distance. I don't hit the ball very far in general, but with the TPS 8.0 irons, I've added 10 yards to every club in the bag. These are absolutely great, clubs. Oh, by the way, they cost significantly less than some of the bigger names out there. Don't be fooled though, Powerbilt makes GREAT clubs.
Cons: Then only con is the grips. For some reason Powerbilt switched grip companies this year and went with Winn. I know they are a great grip maker, but I just don't like them. I replaced the grips immediately after my first round with the irons.
Quality: Great construction, and as I mentioned above, Powerbilt has a lifetime warranty!
Review Summary: Fantastic clubs at a Fantastic price.
