On 2006-06-14, NotSureYet rated this PureSpin Diamond Face Wedge Set a 4...(7111)

Details: 52 degree attack wedge, 56 sand wedge and 60 lob wedge

Purchase: From about 110 yards in, I generally hit a lot of good shots that land on the green within 5-20 feet of the pin but roll much farther away (most of the year, I play on greens that are relatively fast and hard). I was amazed when I played with a guy from my club who is also an 11-12 handicap who hit some shots that I was sure would roll way off the green but stuck quickly and sometimes even drew back. He was using a new diamond coated Purespin attack wedge. The reviews I read indicated people either really loved or really hated the PureSpin wedges. I found a 3 wedge set for $99 on the Internet and thought I'd give them a try.
Pros: I've played 4 rounds so far with the new wedges. I haven't hit any balls with the attack wedge (52 degree) that spun backwards yet, but most full swing shots have stuck within about 2 feet of where they landed and the additional spin and check up is noticeable. I love this club out of the fairway and the rough. I've used the 60 degree lob wedge for a lot of delicate little chips/pitches out of the light rough around the green. Whether it's because of added backspin or not, I do, so far, have better distance control.
Cons: So far, I've had a terrible time using the lob wedge and sand wedge from the fairway. The sole of the lob wedge seems to dig into the ground like a knife and I've chunked more than a few shots. I've also bladed and shanked the sand wedge from the fairway quite a few times. This probably has more to do with the golfer (me) than the clubs. I don't think I've figured out exactly where and how to catch the ball to maximize club performance.
Quality: I have read reviews that indicate the diamond coating wears off over time with these clubs. Every time you hit any of the clubs, grass and dirt lodge deeply within the grooves and within the diamond coating. I have a club washer on my cart and use it after every hit (a wet towel doesn't do the trick). I don't know whether the constant scrubbing will cause the diamond coating to rub off quickly. It is a concern. I would be more concerned if the clubs cost $125 each as opposed to $33. I have also read complaints that the clubs chew up balls. My friend who uses a ProV1 reported this to me. I have been using a BlackMax and Callaway HX Blue. There is added scuffing through the round but it's not like you need a new ball every time you hit it. It appears to me that the more crisp you hit the attack wedge, the more scuffing occurs. So, if I hit it perfect and cause the ball to draw backwards, it will probably have a deeper scuff mark. Sounds like a fair trade to me.

Review Summary: I am convinced that the diamond coating technology does allow a golfer like me (8-13 handicapper) to impart a lot more backspin on the ball than other wedges without spending hour upon hour improving your swing on the practice range. I'm not entirely sold on the sand wedge and lob wedge yet but love the 52 degree attack wedge. I think you need to be willing to work with these clubs for a good number of rounds to get the right feel for them. If I rated the attack wedge alone, it would be a 5. If I rated the sand wedge or lob wedge alone, it would probably be a 3.
