On 2004-09-10, EFCP rated this RAM 420cc Forged Titanium Driver a 5...(4334)
Purchase: I bought the driver off ebay, for about $30, $40 including shipping. I had always loved the way the Wilson Deep Red series looked, but since I had some serious problems hitting drivers at the time, decided to go with a cheaper club. This way if i snapped another shaft off a driver, at least it wouldn't be an expensive one. I read a review somewhere sayingthat the RAM had the same color, and looked just like the Deep Red. At this price, you can't go wrong.
Pros: I know it will be hard to believe from what I wrote about snapping shafts, but overall my game has improved dramatically over the summer. My handicap has dropped by about 10 strokes to the low 20's, due mainly to being able to keep my drives in play. The RAM driver had a lot to do with this. I can't remember the last time I hit a seriously nasty slice with this thing. The large head is extremely forgiving, as everything goes straight off the tee, perhaps with a slight fade. And the distance is right up there with any other driver I've used. Recently I've compared it to the Biggest Big Bertha (my old driver, which I still occasionally slice), the Hawkeye VFT, and the R580 and R510. The RAM is better than the older drivers, and just as good as the Taylor Mades, but at the fraction of the price. As for distance, this ranks right up there with the all of them. I just hit my first 300 last week, which is pretty good. Granted, I gave it almost all I had, but considering that I'm 5'10" and 140 pounds, the RAM really packs a punch.
Cons: One complaint I have about the RAM 420 is that the stock shaft was too short. When I got it, the club measured right around 44 inches, about a full inch shorter than most drivers. This really helped my control, but I always felt like I could get more distance if it was longer. I recently extended the shaft myself, and now I have absolutely no complaints. With an extra 1.5 inches, I'm averaging about 250-270 yards, up about 20-30 yards from before. The great thing is that I haven't lost any accuracy off the tee.
Quality: The construction of the club is excellent, the head is beautiful to look at, feels solid on contact, and the regular shaft is just right for my swing, which is about 95-100 mph with a driver. The grip feels great, i like a bit of a soft grip that I can really press down on to set up. However, I played a round in the rain and my hands were slipping all over the place. Granted, it was a thunderstorm, but the grip should have been better. No matter, easily fixed. Slapped a new grip on and now it's perfect.
Review Summary: Bottom line- great club. I know a lot of people say that cheaper brands work just as well as the Callaways and Taylor Mades, but I never really believed that until now. This is a great club at less than half the price of a comparably performing club. I;m not saying that all cheaper brands are just as good, I just happened to stumble across this one, and I will not hesitate to try out other RAM products as well. 30 bucks! People pay more than that for a box of balls!
