Purchase: Hi, I'm Robby and I'm a compulsive purchaser of golf clubs.
Between the Perfect Club informercials and the fact that all my friends are carrying one or two hybrid clubs, I thought I'd like to try one these new style of clubs and started watching for deals on ebay. I came across the Ram FX Recovery clubs selling for between $25 and $50 and decided to give one a try.
I ended up buying two of these clubs on ebay for approximately $30 each.
Pros: The fit, finish and contruction all seem to be of good quality.
I bought a 21 degree club first. I liked it so much I bought the 25 degree model a few weeks later. These clubs come with graphite shafts and knock-off Lamkin Crossline grips. The heads are 17-4 stainless steel.
The clubs hit great. The 21 degree model is marked as a 4 iron replacement. However, I get 3 iron distance with a MUCH higher trajectory. There is typically less than feet of roll after getting 190 yards of carry. The same is true of the 25 degree model; it is maked 5 iron, but goes 4 iron distance with very little roll. Both of these clubs are perfect for long par 3's.
The sweet spot is large and off center hits are not punished too severely. Fat shots and thin shots will still give you good distance.
One of the most noticable things about these clubs is how heavy the heads are. Without a doubt these are the heaviest hybrid/utility clubs I've tried, and I've tried most of the major brands. The weight of these clubs really tears through the deep rough. If you know where the ball is you can get it out the junk and back in the fairway, regardless of whether you can see the ball or not. One swing of that heavy club and weeds, heather, dirt and ball all go sailing towards the fairway. You can clear thick brush and weeds like you're swinging a machete.
The Rams also work well out of fairway bunkers. The wide rounded bottoms keep the clubs from digging into the sand. With the high trajectory of these clubs getting out of the sand and over the lip of the bunker is an easy task.
These clubs compare most closely a heavier version of the Perfect Club or Nike iron-woods.
If you try to look these up on the internet you will see that Ram is marketing at least three different utility clubs. The 'Concept Recovery' and two different models of the 'FX Recovery'. This is the blue model; not the dark maroon one being sold in Europe.
Cons: The grips are of poor quality. They felt hard and slick from the very beginning. However, I'm not going to downgrade the club over a disposable part that can be replaced for $5 or less.
Quality: Good overall quality. Nothing spectacular, just a good solid bargain.
Review Summary: These are everything you're looking for in a hybrid/utility club at a great price.
