On 2004-04-02, Big Bad Wolf rated this Snake Eyes Strike Line II a 5...(3260)
Purchase: Golfsmith had the preassembled Strike Line I on its sales floor with the 35 inch shaft. Price was $89.99 without a headcover. On the store indoor putting green I tried it out and found it eminently easier to handle and sink putts with than the Odessy White Hot Two Ball, which was the putter I originally intended to purchase. For my taste I found the Odessy way too cumbersome and complicated. It just seemed that the Odessy had too much going on for good concentration.
The Snake Eyes Stike Line I seemed easier to maneuver, line up, and sink puts with. Still, I prefer a 34 inch shaft, and I didn't like the fact that for $90 it didn't come with a headcover, an item sold separately for $9.95.
So, I moseyed on over to the custom make your own clubs department, where lo and behold, I found all the items to build the same putter at less cost. Moreover, they had the new Strike Line II head, which is more blade like and ever so slightly less in height than the Strike Line I; although it weighs the same 400 grams. Bottom line: I put together the Strike Line II head, a 34 inch steel shaft, and an official Snake Eyes putter grip, and let Golfsmith's pro build the whole thing for me.
Cost was $39.50 for the head; $4.95 for the shaft; $4.55 for the grip; and $21.99 for assembly; for a total cost of $70.99. After buying the headcover separately, grand total was $80.94, plus sales tax (natch), meaning I saved $19.03, plus tax (8.25%) on that amount, for the privilege of having the putter custom made for moi. Whoo-hoo!
Pros: After waiting three days to pick it up (pant-pant), I tried it out at the driving range putting green. The Strike Line II is every bit as well balanced and weighted as the Strike Line I, although it took me about a half hour to get accustomed to lining it up with the ball. But once I did, I was two putting from 25-30 feet, which for me ain't bad!
Cons: Nothing. After all, it was custom made for moi.
Quality: All right, the head is made in China, but aren't they all nowadays? But the construction is sound. The shaft is the same stepless steel all the manufacturers use, cut to my specifications; and the grip is the ubiquitous soft feel squishy rubber, flat front with the official Snake Eyes logo. Plus the headcover is nice, soft to the touch, supple white leather with those two Snake Eyes staring out at you. Golfsmith did a very professional job assembling it; well worth the $22 for me not to foul it up trying to do it myself.
Review Summary: Gotta luv it!
