On 2003-07-18, Ball Mark rated this Snake Eyes 5040 Wedge a 5...(1813)

Purchase: I purchased the components from Golfsmith in a buy-two-get-one-free promotion. I believe the heads are normally $25 per. I also go Rifle Spinner shafts and Golfpride Tour Wrap grips. (About $13 and $2)
Pros: I assembled both a 51 degree approach wedge and a 55 degree sand wedge. I like the solid, smooth feel of both wedges. The low bounce of the 51 coupled with the smooth, tapered sole enables the club head to glide through the grass. Square grooves impart ample spin. Part of that spin comes from the delayed kick of the Rifle Spinner shaft. The AW shots land like a bag of sand. Not too little spin, not too much. The Sand Wedge is simply the best I've ever used. It works out of sand, rough and fairway equally well. It is more versatile than any other wedge I've used to date (including Cleveland, Taylor Made and Golfsmith Forged). I built both clubs to a D4 swing weight using the hosel weight port and tungsten weights.
Cons: The sweet spot on both wedges is rather small. You need to practice with these wedges, since off center hits are not at all forgiving. These are blades!
Quality: Construction of the heads are top notch. Good quality chrome, very stylish logos and well cut grooves. The chrome is wearing quickly on the sand wedge but I seem to find the sand a bit and sand is highly abrasive stuff.

Review Summary: I would buy and play both again in a heartbeat. They offer great feel, are of high quality and are very reasonably priced, especially when you build them yourself.
