On 2007-06-20, Evil R1 rated this Solus Golf RD Series 4.1 a 4...(7811)

Details: Loft: 56º and 61º Finish: Black Oxide/QPQ Shaft: True Temper proprietary USGW-38

Purchase:
Pros: The design of the wedge is fantastic. The Face is CNC Milled like the Titleist Spin Milled and puts a ton of spin on the ball, so to get these to hop and stop or back up isn't a problem. Also, in the past I had dedicated wedges for dedicated places on the golf course. I had a high bounce Sand Wedge (56º-13º) for fluffy bunkers but was useless from the fairway unless it just rained. I had a Gap Wedge (52º-11º) that was good from bunkers and full shots but for chipping / pitching it had too much bounce and/or camber. And my Lob Wedge (60º-9º) was good from most lies but didn't have any release to it, so you had to fly it to the hole. Each Solus Wedge can be used from a variety of locations so no longer do I have dedicated wedges. Sitting square, the leading edge really does get right down to the ground give you a lot of confidence that you will not skull it and hit a quality shot. If you are in a bunker or rough, just open the far a bit and you have all the bounce you'll need. These wedges are automatic from the Sand, great off the fairway, and for delicate chip shots are fantastic. They really do everything the Informercial says they do
Cons: I have a love/hate relationship with the shafts. For full shots, I like the lighter shafts but for chipping I find they are too light.
Quality: These are Cast wedges that are on Par with any Titleist Vokey or Cleveland wedge. The Black finish (like the Old Can or Black Pearl) will and does wear off over time leaving the raw metal exposed and will rust. If the rust bothers you, just drop the wedges in some Coke.

Review Summary: The solus wedge is something some people will love and some people will hate. You will hate them if you like a more traditional blade-like wedges as these are cavity back wedge. They have a funky eclipse medallion in the cavity that looks out of place and the shaft seems a bit weak/cheap when you first pick it up. But if you are a results oriented individual, then these are a must try. After a few rounds you will forget all about the above 'issues' as the club just works, and works well.
