On 2004-09-16, Average Golfer rated this Sonartec Md Utility Wood a 5...(4387)

Purchase: This club is the Sonartec Md 21* utility wood. I won it in a contest, so I really didn't pay anything for it, but it retails in the local golf shops for $199.
Pros: You've probably already heard all the buzz about hybrid clubs, and how they are better to use than the long irons. I am not going to argue with that; it's true. This club has 21* of loft, so it is basically a 3 iron replacement. I hit a 4 iron about 185 yards, yet I never hit the 3 iron consistently, and even when I did catch the 3 iron solidly, it seemed to only give me about seven more yards. With this club I don't even worry about catching it solidly. I get about 200 yards out of it, and it has a nice solid feel at impact.
Cons: The grip is made by Lamkin and I believe it is called the Crossline model. For those of you more familiar with the Golf Pride brand, it is similar to their Tour Velvet model. I really don't care for the grip. It has a mildly rough feel to it, and it is not nearly as tacky as a Golf Pride Tour Wrap grip. I think it might appeal to those who like cord grips, but don't want them quite as rough. Definitely lacking in tackiness in the feel department, but a few bucks for a grip change at your local pro shop can quickly remedy that.
Quality: The quality of the construction is excellent. The fine Sonartec clubhead with the channel on the sole to prevent ballooning ball flights works wonderfully. The shaft is made by UST, and is the IROD model specifically made for hybrid clubs such as this. It really performs well. It has low torque, to keep your ball on track, and it has a nice kick to it without feeling whippy.

Review Summary: If you are like me and have trouble hitting a three iron, swallow your pride and get one of these hybrid clubs. This club is so much easier to hit that you will never carry that three iron again. There are other lofts availble to replace the other long irons as well. If there is a distance gap between your shortest fairway wood and the longest iron that you hit consistently well, fill that gap in with a hybrid, and the Sonartec Md with the UST IROD shaft is a great choice.
