On 2003-06-26, Darnold rated this Srixon Hi-Brid Tour 3piece a 5...(1644)

Purchase: Traded two sleves of new Pro V1's at a local golf shop for two new sleves of the Srixon's. This search for a new ball actually started late last season when my old faithful Rule 35 Blue was becoming dated in the distance department. I tried the Wilson True Distance and it seemed to be nearly as soft as my R35 Blue but consistently 7-10yrds further in distance. The problem is that i like soft feeling balls because it keeps my swing tempo in check. When a ball feels hard i instinctively swing faster and this gets my hands turning over in the impact zone a little too much and thus i get about a 12yrd draw. So i like and try to swing at about 80% of my max with a smooth tempo. Well after some use the Wilson's started feeling a bit too hard. On a feel scale of 1-10 with the Maxfli HT Balata being a 10 the R35's were about 8.7 and while still new the Wilson True Distance felt to be about an 8.3. But once the Wilson got a little use the feel seemed to drop down to about a 7.5 (not good). So for this season i tried the Srixon Pro UR, the Pro V1, and the new Wilson True Tour Elite. I would rate their feel as: 1. Pro UR= 8 2. Pro V1= 8-8.7 (Note: this ball seemed to be VERY swing speed dependent for feel and when i swung between 85-95% of my max [105mph] then it would increase in softness. Of course all balls do this!) 3. Wilson Tour Elite= 7.8 (i was dissapointed with the feel of this one because i expected a softer feel) I was NOT satisfied with any of these balls feel although i did like the higher trajectory and putting feel of the Pro UR. The Pro V1 had about a Med-High Trajectory and putted as well as the Pro UR and was more durable. The True Tour Elite putted well as one would expect but that's was all that i liked about it. Thus i was still on a mission to find a ball with distance, (why not take free distance if you can have it) a med-high trajectory at least, and MOST importantly a SOFT Feel. And that leads us to the Srixon Hi-Brid Tour.... BTW, in the Chicagoland area the Srixon Hi-Brid Tour costs about $28/dozen.
Pros: On the Feel Meter the Hi-Brid Tour is a 9.8, no other ball that i have tried comes close other than the old Maxfli HT & Titleist balatas(which are 10's). ---------------------------------------- My Distance Meter based upon back to back testing is as follows: Last seasons distance averages using the Wilson True Distance Ball (take 7yrds average away for Rule 35 Blue): 3iron = 190(180 carry) 5iron = 170 (160 carry) 7iron = 150 (140 carry) 9iron = 125 (120 carry) This year: Srixon Hi-Brid Tour = 15yrds longer Pro V1= 10yrds longer Srixon Pro UR = 6yrds longer ---------------------------------------- Trajectory Scale: Srixon Hi-Brid Tour = Mid-High-High Pro V1 = Mid-High-High Srixon Pro UR= High-Very High Wilson True Distance= Mid-High Callaway Rule 35 Blue=High ---------------------------------------- Putting Scale: I haven't tried this aspect yet since i just came from hitting the Hi-Brid in the park for testing. However i can make the following observations for the other balls. Speed= Pro UR & Pro V1 are the best so far Trueness/Roll= 1. Wilson True Distance and Tour Elite 2. Pro UR 3. Pro V1 4. Rule 35 blue Tracking(how well it followed my reads which include the contours of the greens)= 1. Pro UR 2. Pro V1 3. Rule 35 Blue 4. True Balls (these balls seem less affected by the contours and want to go straight which actually threw my reads off until i became accustomed to it) Feel= Pro UR & Pro V1 % of Putts Made (Note: this takes everything into account for the final product, you can also add in confidence which comes from consistent performance of good putts) 1. Pro UR 2. PRO V1 3. Wilson True 4. Rule 35 Blue I anticipate that the Hi-Brid Tour based upon other putting reviews will run either 2nd or 3rd behind the Pro UR and possibly the Pro V1. ----------------------------------------- Spin Rating: Can't comment yet but i don't typically back the ball up. Instead i look for my ball to do the "drop and stop or one hop/stop" type deal and expect that everything up to my 5 iron will stick on a green. Based upon my hitting in the park the Hi-Brid Tour didn't roll as much as my Pro V1 and that stuck the greens well for me. This can be a little deceiving however since the Pro UR did the same (as the Hi-Brid Tour) and it did NOT hold the greens well. I do think that the Srixon Hi-Brid Tour will hold the greens at least as well at the Pro V1 in spite of this similarity to it sibling because the Pro UR uses a High to Very High Trajectory to try and hold green whereas the Hi-Brid Tour uses spin. The Pro V1 definately has spin despite its "drop and stop" trajectory which is why it holds so well for me. The Pro UR from Srixon is suppose to "drop and stop" but it was definately two notches below the Pro V1 and the Rule 35 blue (which i rate equally in this respect). Basically the Pro UR was the equal to the Wilson True Distance in this respect which is to say at the bottom of the pack. ------------------------------------------- Durability: Can't say for sure at this point but i can say that after 10 hits with my 7iron the Hi-Brid Tour still looks new. This is better than the Rule 35 Blue and the Wilson True Distance (i think this is now the True Velocity Distance). The Pro UR was the worst ball in this category that i have ever used (yes even worse than my HT's!!!). The Kevlar (poly-amide)that is incorporated in the Pro UR's cover scuffs and comes through the Urethane part of the cover blend with normal use. I found that i needed two balls per 9holes with it, especially when i would use my wedge, gap wedge and 64deg Lob wedge! I think the Hi-Brid Tour will be much better based upon my brief experience and more so due to others reviews in this area. --------------------------------------- While i have yet to put the ball, see how it holds greens and check its durability through a round i think that this ball is a in the 9's. By far it is the best ball and it is less expensive than any of the other balls that i paid for. When you can get the best ball for roughly $10/dozen less how can you beat it?
Cons: Nothing as of yet!
Quality: It is a three piece ball. It uses a Urethane outer cover (synthetic balata), a thin Wound mid layer (rubber windings like the old balata balls) and a solid rubber core.

Review Summary: The best ball on the market!!! The Lowest Cost Premium ball behind the Top Flite Tour and the longest i've tested. It's the softest feel with mid-high to high trajectory. Bottom Line: Play the BEST ball. The Srixon Hi-Brid Tour
