On 2008-12-19, DocT rated this TaylorMade TP Red w/ LDP 2008 a 5...(8243)

Details: 4-layer ball. Cast thermoset urethane cover: promotes controllable spin off irons, and shear resistance. Feel mantle: softens impact feel. Distance mantle (ionomer): boosts COR and initial velocity. NdV4 core: low compression and softer feel. 360 dimple pattern. LDP equals Low Drag Performance. Red series is designed for high spin players.

Purchase: Received a free box from Dominguez Hills Golf in Carson, CA as part of a promotion to purchase range (ball) cards.
Pros: Really good ball with very good distance off the driver (Cobra L5V F-speed R-flex). Distance is farther than the Bridgestone E6+ 2008 which is also suppose to reduce sidespin. Perhaps the 'LDP' design does come into play to get that extra distance. The ball feels softer compared to the 2008 Titleist ProV1 and 2008 Callaway HX Tour. Same feel as the Bridgestone E6+ and Callaway HX Tour56. What I really like is the distance and straighter ball flight. Off the putter face is ok, not hard or soft.
Cons: I have a difficult time getting the ball to check on the green, as compared to the HX Tour56 which checks on the spot after 1 hop. The TP Red ball will hop and roll a few feet. So I had to change my plan and shoot short of the pin, especially off chip shots.
Quality: Construction is rather durable. 1 ball lasted me about 6 rounds until I lost it in the trees. Not a lot of scuff marks or peels from full wedges. I think 1 ball would have lasted at least 9 holes. I need to stop losing balls to make a final judgement.

Review Summary: Great ball for those who fade. This ball won't cure the fade/slice, nor will the driver. But it will add confidence to your swing to get the ball into the fairway, even though it's on the right side.
