On 2004-04-14, Gary Dahl, Perth Western Australia rated this TaylorMade 420 Burner 10.5 Reg STD Shaft a 5...(3371)

Purchase: EBay in Australia from a US seller, paid US$126 for a demo (was in slightly worse condition than demo). As at April 2004 new ones just reduced from AU$699 to AU$399 from local Oz sellers. I bought this driver at the same time as a Taylor Made R540 9.5 stiff (Mitsubishi Rayon) and an Adams Redline Ti 460 stiff (Fujikuru).
Pros: On looks, the 420 Burner is probably the poor relation of the three. but that's where it ends. In terms of straight out length including roll on a dry driving range (Burswood resort) it was the same or slightly longer than the Redline and about 10 yards longer than the R540. I had a TM 320Ti 10.5 with a pro-force gold 65 before and the 420 is at least 15 yeards longer - and far more consistent. The real benefit is derived from it's ultra forgiving character, accuracy and it's reaction to my attempts at shaping the ball. Draws and fades are a breeze to play when compared with the R540 and the Adams.
Cons: The standard TM grip is a bit slippery for my liking.
Quality: Although mine was acquired as a demo with several marks to the crown and face, it has stood up well. It still feels like a new club.

Review Summary: No hesitation in highly recommending the 420 Burner. I have read the mags and all the hype surrounding the R540 but for me, the 420 beats it hands down. I would rate the Redline second and the R540 third. PS - I also had an Adams GT 303 (10.5 stiff) for a couple of weeks, and to be honest, for the price it is better value than the R540 and the Redline (but the TM 420 Burner kills it!).
