On 2003-04-17, BogeyMan rated this TaylorMade 540 9.5 degree a 5...(1126)
Purchase: I recently played a round of golf with the local Taylormade rep for my area. I didn't know him but during the round he let me hit his 580 and 540 drivers he was carrying (both were the conforming models). What a great job, this guy had new everything - probably over $3k of Taylormade equipt in his bag. Right after the round I went home and on to TGW.com and bought a "excellent condition" 540 club that someone must have returned for $299 - no tax bec. online purchase and free shipping - what's better than that!!!
Pros: Light, well balanced, nice size head - 350cc. I don't like the 400's - they're bigger than my head! - this game needs to have some challenge. My deal was I have only played a 3 wood off the tees for the past few years - I have a strong 3 (12.5 degree) ERCII which is conforming and i love it. I need to emphasize this next point ..... I was not in the market for a driver... was very happy with my 225 to 240 yard high launch driving, mostly bec. I'm straight and can work left to right with ease with the ERC club - not right to left however - but that doesn't bother me - Nickalus didn't do that until he was on tour for several years way back in the 60's. Anyhoo, my first drive with the 540 was a miss hit - i skipped the club on ground before ball but drive still went 240 yds and straight as can be. Next hole i eased up and though about what Hogan said about Mickey Wright's swing - the best swing M or F that he ever saw - with that high easy follow thru and amazing tempo. I eased up and launched a beautifully straight 265 yard blast. The Taylormade dude just smiled - he knew he had me. I continued to hit straight drives and also worked left to right with ease - actually easier than with my ERCII strong 3 which surprised me. The traj. was more medium which I really liked -let it roll!!!!!
Cons: Mine hasn't been delivered yet. The grip is awful - cheap junk for that price, frankly it is a disgrace.
Quality: Titanium, cast, sounds sweet at impact. Very forgiving off center hits. The grip stinks - mine will get a winn grip right away. For the price you'd think taylormade would put a decent grip on this club. I told the rep this and he just shrugged. I see a nice winn grip with Taylormade logo in this club's future. Come on Taylormade Callaway is doing it.
Review Summary: I was not in the market, I hate hype, I don't like to make impulse buys. I guess sometimes you have to break all your rules. Congratulations Taylormade. "These guys are good!"
