Purchase: I needed a new driver! I play and like Taylor Made driver/woods but cannot justify $500 plus for the r7 driver. Recently at my club, I took both the 540XD and 580XD (demos) for a test drive. I used the 580XD for a couple of holes and decided against it as the head on the club was huge! The 540 XD, while only slightly small, was a different story.
Pros: Up until this year, I would hit whatever ball I took out of my bag - this year I made a conscious effort to improve my game. Cleaned the club face every shot et al. I found Pro V1s to be longer, straighter and provided the "drop and stop" action on the green (a product that is as advertised). Off the tee, I used a Taylor Made Firesole 3 wood with stiff shaft - averaged about 210 yards. This year using Pro V1 averaged about 235 yards. Off the tee (including yesterday), with the 540 XD demo, that has seen a better day, I averaged 275-280 yards. On a par 4 470 yards, I hit driver, 6 iron - I was getting BALCO comments from the others in my group! I am a believer!
Cons: I think all drivers should have wider grips (diameter) and will change my new driver once it arrives. This change for me seems to offer more swing stability!
Quality: Excellent - again somewhat biased as I have played with Taylor Made clubs for 8 years and probably won't chnage.

Review Summary: The bottom line - hit it farther - hit it straighter - does not break the bank -- purchased new one on eBay last week for $149.99 plus shipping - technology that was top of the heap a year or two ago still works great -- save your money!
