On 2004-10-29, Miko rated this TaylorMade 540XD with Speeder Shaft a 5...(4710)
Purchase: Have been using a Titleist 975D for the past few years and have been happy with it until I played a round with a friend who only took up the game a year ago (I have been playing for over 5 yrs) and he was outdriving me by 10-15 yards with a TM series 300. Ultimately it was bruising to my ego, so I decided move to a Taylor Made. Just got back from a trip to Asia where I found a brand new 540XD with a Fujikura Speeder shaft R-flex for $320. A steal considering the shaft itself costs over $100 alone.
Pros: I was debating on whether to go for the 580XD, but since my old Titleist is only about 260cc's the I felt that 440cc's of the 580XD was too much for me. My old driver was becoming more and more difficult to control as I was continuously tring to max it out everytime, resulting in massive hooks or the twisting of the shaft at impact. I have just returned from the driving range and all I can say is "WOW!" My previous drives maxed out at about 230yards. This afternoon I was carrying 230 yards using beat up range balls. The Titleist and the TM are like chalk and cheese. The TM is so so easy to hit-I cant stress that enough. Even if you have a so-so swing you will be able to get the ball to travel. On off center hits the ball strayed off target by a max of about 10-15 yards (easy to live with) but when you do hit that massive sweet spoyt its "bye bye ball!" The Speeder shaft and the club head together make a wonderful combination. Easy to hit and still allows you to shape your shots with ease. If you're looking to add more distance to your game this is the driver for you-no doubt about it. Im very particular about the sound my driver makes, and while it is not as sweet sounding as the "thwack" of the Titleist, it is in no way as loud as some other drivers out there that sound like a pistol going off when hit. The club sets up very cleanly at address, so its relatively easy to align to the target. The club fits my swing nicely and I am able to draw the ball without much effort.
Cons: Perhaps TM could have an alignment arrow on the club. Thats the only other thing I would have wanted from the club
Quality: Construction and quality top notch. However after one use at the range, found that the sole of club scratches rather easily, but it no biggie.
Review Summary: I was looking for an extra 20 yards off my drives and because of this club and a little more practice, hopefully it will be even more. My jaw dropped after my first solid hit with the driver; it was as though the ball refused to come down. I have always been a Titleist nut, but TM has changed that for me. You cant go wrong with this driver, and because of the R7 and R5 hype, you will find great deals out there. Would recommend the Speeder shaft to anyone as it certainly contributes to even more distance from this club. If you're like me and always the first one to hit their second shots on par 4's and 5's, get this club and you won't be first anymore-and may even be the last to hit!
