On 2004-08-11, Horse rated this TaylorMade 580 XD - Factory Fit Stiff Shaft a 1...(4015)

Purchase: Bought the club at a local golf superstore which had a 14 day money back guarantee. Have since used this facility and brought it back!
Pros: Amazing distance when hit correctly - I just didn't manage this enough! I'm a decent golfer (4 handicap) and it suprised me how seldom I really connected with one using this driver.
Cons: Club Head - Too Big and appears closed at address Shaft - The Factory fitted Stiff Shaft is not as good as Titleists. Grip - Felt cheap and my hands slipped on it Strike - Very little feedback from the clubhead. Difficult to tell where the ball hit on the face or to feel a good strike. Club weight - Too light for my liking. Difficult to feel where the clubhead was througout the swing.
Quality: See above - not convinced about either the shaft (major issue) or the grip (minor issue)

Review Summary: Overall I found this a very difficult club to get used to. Despite the logic that a larger head will be easier to hit consistently well, I found the reverse to be true. The larger head was very difficult to sqaure at impact and I missed a lot of shots to the right. After trying this club for a few rounds I decided to try the r7 instead. I found this to be better in most regards - though still didn't like the standard stiff shaft. I'm now using a Titleist 975k with a Speeder shaft and am very happy with it. Wouldn't rule out going with an r7 with a bettter shaft though. If the r7 or 975 don't appeal I'd advise trying the 510 or 540's. These seem to be more popular on tour and have a more controlable head size. Callaway GBII is another good alternative.
