On 2005-08-29, Cap rated this TaylorMade 580XD 9.5 Stock MAS Stiff Shaft a 5...(6123)

Purchase: Purchased on line from Dick's Sporting goods. Paid $199. Really loved my 1996 vintage Yonex titanium (upgraded to a Harmon Tour shaft a few years ago) but had seen friends recenlty upgrade to high tech, oversize drivers and was impressed with their results. I considered Taylor Made R7 and R5 as well as a Cleveland Comp but the more modest price of the 580XD pushed me toward it. Also, I thought I would probably get obsessed with tinkering with the R7's adjustments rather than making good, consistent swings. There are enough variables in golf I think without a driver head that would make you want to tote a tool belt on the course.
Pros: Adds at least 10 to 15 yards on average over old stick which I could hit a long way. I have played 4 rounds with it now and have even hit several drives that I know traveled 25 to 35 yards longer than I could have ever expected with my old driver. Most impressive thing though is the forgivenss of the big head. Just seems hard to hit a really poor drive with it. Much, much larger sweet spot and much more forgiving. Impressive looking club also.
Cons: Although it is supposedly standard length if took some time to get used to slightly shorter shaft as compared to my old stick which was supposedly standard length. Also takes some time to adjust to having to tee it up so high as the oversize head demands. I had to change my set up a bit and play the ball more forward to get what seems the most effective trajectory. Also, something about its feel makes it seem less comfortable at those times when you really want to rip it. That is probably good though, I find myself getting nice results and length with a swing that for me is moderate. As I have gotten more used to it though I find that I am beginning to be more comfortable really going after it when I feel it necessary.
Quality: In a word , excellent.

Review Summary: I really like this driver. After adjusting to what seemed to me to be its eccentricities it is longer, straighter, and more satisfying to hit than any drivers I have ever used before. Also, I have always hit a power fade and this thing is consistently giving me a nice little draw that is adding some roll. My playing partners are shaking their heads and saying "Caramba" pretty regularly and I find that the 580XD is a very worthy entry in the high tech driver arms race for a middling golfer like me.
