Purchase: demo at adidas/taylor made pro shop at the range
Pros: R7 -- i like the r7's 'messability' (or should that be 'tweakability'? ... hmmn, i think it's the latter). i tried the japanese non-conforming version, which sports a mitsubishi rayon s-flex 4.1 torque 45.25 inch mid-kick point shaft. the weights were set to 'neutral'(red weights on the flanks, yellow on the heel). ball flight was mid-high, and because the face was closed at least 1*, i drew 8 of the 10 balls i hit. avg distance was at least 250-270 yards (the range end-nets are set at 225yds; my balls hit the top of or flew over the 40-yd high nets). i asked the salesgirl to change it to a fade, and she moved the 2 red weights around and it faded, with a massively boring low trajectory (i guess it is a combination of the shaft's kickpoint and the weights).
the XR-05 is a sweet sounding driver. this non-conforming japanese spec version (most jap clubs are not confirming .. i wonder why?) comes equipped with a fujikura (no designation) s-flex 59gm 4.1 torque low-kick shaft. the ball flight is high for massive carries. this one flew to the top and over of the net on 9 of 10 hits (in spite of 3 bad hits), and would be at least 260-280 yds.
my swingspeed for both were around 105-111mph. my friend -- who shoots in the low 80's but claims to be an 18 h'capper -- swings in the 92-98mph range and gets 250 easy.
the look -- the r7 is a handsome, techy unit, with lots to fidget. i'll be looking for the tp version, which i've read has a square face, which 'hookers'(no pun intended) like me prefer to the closed face regular quad driver.
the xr-05 is a simple, classically designed unit which sports the best feel/strike qualities of any club i've ever tested (and i've done all the titleist models 975d/j/j-vs/l-fe, 983e/k), tm 340/360,510/540/580/xd/tp, clev lanucher 400/460, kzg gemini/sp700, smt nemesis/shinnecock, calloway gbb2/erc2, maruman v-sonic,bang mellow yellow/o-matic etc etc).
Cons: for the r7 -- the shaft, ad the closed face. the sound on the hits ... also not happening. head also scratches easily.
for the xr-05 ... the price ... at us$1,250 for the limited edition is crazy & doesn't justify the price.
Quality:
Review Summary: r7 - tp has many many options (883 options i think), but i don't quite like the normal driver which has a closed face.
xr-05 - price is horrible, and nothing is worth us$1,250 standard.
