On 2002-12-19, D Miller rated this TaylorMade Burner 420 Stiff / 9.5 a 5...(871)
Purchase: I purchased the Burner 420 Stiff/9.5 at Golf Galaxy. I traded in a Taylor Made 360 TI Stiff/9.5 with the standard TM shaft.
It cost $299 minus the $120 they gave me for the trade-in.
The 360 TI shaft seemed a little long at 45.5 inches and was still somewhat "whippy" even in a stiff flex. Another thing I disliked about the 360 TI was that the club head felt very heavy in comparison to the lite shaft.
The Burner 420 is on ebay "buy it now" for $199.00. It's a great value for the money.
Pros: Out of the box, the Burner 420 was a perfect fit for me. As compared to the 360 TI. The Burner 420 was still lite while maintaining a solid/stiff feeling between the clubhead and the shaft. This shaft is stiffer than the 360 TI and seems to have a higher flex point.
Although the clubhead is a whopping 400cc+, it feels smaller than the 360 TI because of the incredible balance between clubhead and shaft.
The launch angle and flight are perfect just a touch higher than the 360 TI. I still think that you low ball hitters could even go to a 10.5 in the Burner 420 without getting that ballooning affect. If a had the money, I'd carry 2 of these. A 10.5 for those calm sunny days and a 9.5 for those Windy Chicago afternoons.
Accuracy is great. My "big" miss is usually a big slice. I've played 3 rounds with the club and have at worst faded the ball just into the right rough. Good hits have been that slight "turnover" draw we all look for.
The club head isn't as closed at address as the 360 TI. It is much more "square". It has a little more of that "roll-face" technology that some of the other top drivers have, which the 360 TI doesn't.
A great price point as compared to the new dogs on the Market.
Great sound !!!
Cons: Nothing to dislike.
Some will replace the stock grip quickly...
Flames should be painted on the top!!!
Quality: Construction is top notch Taylor Made.
Review Summary: What more can you say, the Burner is back.
I would have a difficult time justifying paying $400 for the Titleist, Callaway or TM 500's when the BURNER is $299.
Looks great, feels great, sounds great!!!
I'm a 12 handicapper...
