Details: R7 - stiff rifle shafts
Purchase: I purchased these irons at the PGA superstore in Atlanta. They were great and fit me perfectly. I am 6'7' so this was a challenge. My old irons were RAC OS2 with an inch plus shaft and plus 2 lie angle in regular flex. Current R7s are 1.25 longer with a plus 3 lie angle and stiff shafts. I bought these because I finally wanted to get fitted on a launch monitor (Im not very good at the game but the launch monitor fitting looked kind of cool). Pros: I really like these irons. I think a lot of it is the fitting so this review is not perfect. Distance-wise these are about the same as my good RAC OS shots but the distance is much more consistent. It also is a little easier to draw the ball but I have no business doing that anyway. These irons are certainly much straighter than my old irons. Again, a lot of this probably has to do with fit but the results have been very good so far.
I used to be scared of my 4 iron but I have found this one is relatively easy to hit and is very consistent between 195 and 210 yards out (depending on trajectory which is certainly pilot error at times). I actually like my 4 iron and dont try to not swing quite as hard with my hybrid - a true recipe for disaster. Cons: I really have no legit complaints but there does seem to be a huge distance gap now between the pitching wedge and my 52 degree gap wedge - I think the pitching wedge is 46 degrees so this makes sense but I am now kind of lost between 125 and 110 yards - although again this is probably pilot error and I could always use a different wedge. Quality: Great. I had jumbo grips put on so they are just standard tour velvets not the cool taylor made R7 grips but I really doubt the difference is responsible for my inconsitency. Review Summary: Great irons - however, remember that my comparison is also based on a great fitting at the PGA Superstore. The ball goes a long ways and it goes pretty high which was what I wanted so I am pretty happy.
I tried the Callaway X20s and didnt quite like them as much - they did not seem as forgiving to me. I really liked the Ping G5s a lot but they were $150 more and at the end of the day I probably would have paid $150 more for the R7s. An on-the-course test with the G5s might have swayed me -- point being they were pretty sweet irons too.

Purchase: I bought these off ebay brand new for $500.00. I've been looking for new irons for close to 10 years and have tried a bunch but untill now haven't found any that worked better than the old Topflights I've been using. Pros: I love how these feel when you hit 'em. Almost like forged clubs. Not a huge head but still pretty forgiving and they are accurate! I have struggled with my long irons for a few years now and one very important factor for me is that I can hit these long irons almost as easily as the short irons and just as accurately. Beautiful balance. In fact they are beautiful clubs to look at as well. Not a huge factor but kind of nice. Also these have very nice grips. No need to go out and regrip. Did I mention these are very accurate. These love to go straight but I can draw or fade them and knock downs, which I've never before been very good at, are easy. Cons: Well even at 1/2 the list price these are expensive but so is everything else in golf these days. Quality: Taylormade will only enhance their already excellent reputation for quality with these clubs. They are gorgeous and the construction appears to be first rate. Review Summary: Well, like I said earlier I have been searching for new irons for years and finally found the irons I have been searching for. I'm thrilled with these clubs. My problem now is that I no longer have anything to blame a bad shot on! On 2006-12-16, Lifo rated this TaylorMade R7 a 3...(7555)
Details: Standard stiff steel shaft
Purchase: Ebay $400 Pros: The club is beautiful. Best looking iron out there. Feel is suprisingly good for cavity back. They feel semi forged. They are definitely long! Probably due to the weight which I explain in the dislikes. Cons: I had to sell these clubs because they were too light. They were like a feather. Not something a good golfer wants. Perfect for an old man though. I took them to my local pro shop and they were a D .5! Maybe I just got a bad set or something Quality: Very good Review Summary: Overall the club would be great if it werent so light! The swing weight is way of here. I dont know why taylormade would do this. I ended up buying the TP model. Much more weight, better looking from the top down and very solid, not for the average handicapper though! If you have a slow swing get these clubs! But I feel a 12 and under handicapper needs more control of the club and with the weight of these its not going to happen.

Details: Standard set 4-AW - Stiff 90 gram steel shaft - standard TM grip
Purchase: Purchased off Ebay for $420 with shipping. Most retailers wanted over $500 for the set. Pros: These are great feeling irons. The loft on them is stronger than my previous RAC OS irons. These irons feel like butter when you hit them in the sweet spot. Off center hits provide good feedback without the harsh vibration in the grip. This helps for good adjustment to your stance and ball position. The balance between the shaft and head are absolutely perfect for controlled shots with a great 'feel' for where the clubhead is! Wonderful! Cons: The lie of these clubs was at least one degree off the manufacturer's specs right out of the box. They were checked at 1 to 2 degrees flat, which was causing some right hand drift on shots and making me overcompensate with a draw-type shot in order to hit them straight. A quick check at the local repair shop diagnosed and corrected this problem quickly. Off center shots are not as forgiving as some of the hype on the internet would suggest... but still good in comparison with other irons I've tried. Quality: As stated in the dislikes, the overall quality of these irons is top-notch. However, one should have the lie of the clubs checked out of the box because they can be seriously off the mark! The grip and the club finish are wonderful, but I would probably have gone with a satin finish instead of the high polished chrome just for durability. Review Summary: These are great irons and can be acquired at a fair price overall.
