Purchase: I had been a Mizuno player for about five years (staff player the last two). I used the 14's, 29's, and the 33's, when a friend of mine who was the Taylor rep to the smaller tours at the time asked me if I wanted to try a set of the X-300 irons with the rile 6.5 shaft. They were already set up perfect for me from the guy they were made for, that is why he asked. So I said sure, of course, because I had been thinking about switching to a cavity back anyway. Because I really didn't play or practice that much in the winter and it always took a little longer than I liked to get back up to speed in the spring. Anyways, I decided to give them a far chance I would use just them for 3 months. As usuall with new irons, the first month or so was trying, because I was hitting my Mizuno's great and the sweet spots aren't the same on the x-300's. But after about two months I was hitting them as well as I had ever hit the Mizuno's, with just as much distance and accuracy! I love them.
Pros: These are the best irons, cavity back or blade, that I have ever played. I have yet to find a weakness. They are just as accurate, workable and long as any blade. I have yet to find a shot that I can't hit with them. And of course they are more forgiving than any blade. But they are not really a game improvement club. You have to have a very good swing to use these clubs effectively. They are not forgiving if you hit it of the tip toe of the club, or anywhere similar to that. If you can play a blade well, you will absolutely love these clubs, and never go back.
Cons: The only thing to watch for is the Rifle Project X shafts. My back-up set came with these shafts in a 6.5 (what I normally play in the rifle). The Rifle Project X shafts play about a half to a full flex stronger! I am a perfect rifle 6.5, but the Project X 6.5 feels like a steel rod! So take notice of what shaft they come with. Other than that, the only thing I don't like about them is that they don't make them anymore, except for their Tour Players. Hard to find in good shape. I have two sets and am always on the look-out for another one that is in great shape.
Quality: The X-300 irons are basically a tour only set. I think TM forged about 1500 sets for "special retailers", and the rest for Tour Players. So, needless to say, the quality of the X-300 is thru-the-roof! They are as close to a handmade forged set of irons as you can get without having a PGA Tour Card.
Review Summary: Contrary to popular rumor, these were not the Prototypes for the 300 series irons. The X-300 irons were specifically designed and forged for Taylor Made touring Professionals. They have almost nothing in common with the 300 series. These irons are basically "hand forged" in Japan. And thusly, in my humble opinion, the finest irons ever made.
