On 2006-05-09, mollydooka rated this Titleist 905T 9.5 Reg a 4...(6906)

Details: Aldila NV 65

Purchase: Went to hit a bucket of balls on the range, and saw a Tiburon on sale for AUS$110 (my old Bang, 360cc, has been in the bag for a few years). They taped it up to have a try, then also gave me a King Cobra 414 (also on special, from AUS$350 down to $250), and then the Titleist 905T (reduced from AUS$725 to 399). The Titleist, even at the 'sale' price, was still double what I wanted to pay for a club. I don't believe in helping line the pockets of millionaire pros generally. But I thought won't hurt to give it a belt.
Pros: As I have a pretty strong grip, I tend to hook if I get too fast. The Tiburon, King Cobra, and my old Bang, were all hooking severely. One of those days! Great for trying out new equipment. However, when I tried the Titleist, it felt great, lovely sound and feel, not much deviation from straight. More solid sound than the 'tinny' sound of the Bang. Got the pro to look at my swing, he worked on the too strong grip, and after a few slices, started hitting it well. Distance was still similar to the old Bang, but accuracy much better. Also like the guide arrow and bar on top of the head, Bang doesn't have anything. I'm sure the visual cue helps, but some manufacturers don't use them.
Cons: I guessed that the head cover wouldn't last long, as described by previous writers. Don't like the stripes much, and would have thought that Titleist could supply a better quality cover with original price tag of $725 (US$560). Ridiculous price for 1 club, when you see other brands for less than US$100 on the net (new).
Quality: Would have preferred a full-cord grip, but the standard one supplied feels ok. Regular flex, as I don't have a super-fast swing speed, 9.5 'cause that's i) the one they had on special for lefties ii) same as my Bang loft (which also has a 65 gm Aldila shaft, but different model) and iii) prefer 9.5 to 10.5 as tend to hit the latter too high.

Review Summary: I bought this club yesterday, what the heck, the extra money that I spent (could have got the King Cobra for AUS$250; 580XD's are on sale at $299, but no left-handed models left here in Perth) works out to around $1 a week over the next 3 years, which is the absolute minimum time I'll hang onto this one. Play around 36 holes per week, so it's a cheap investment. With this club, and a better grip and improved short game, I intend reducing my handicap by 4 strokes this year; shouldn't be hard, 'cause that's where I was 3 years ago!!
