I am a hopeless equipment junkie who is always looking for any edge that technology can give me. I was tired of using my last set of irons ( which are an off brand) and wanted a set of brand name irons which would help my game. I found numerous sets of Tommy Armour Vault irons for sale on e-bay. After doing a little research, I found that in 2003, these irons retailed for about $400. Needless to say, I jumped on them immediately.
Pros: First off, I really liked the price. How many times does one find a name brand set of irons for less than the cost of a new Odyssey putter.
Secondly, the research that I did told me that these irons were the prototype of the Tommy Armour 845 Silverback irons, which sell new for about $450. I also found out that; according to the Maltby Playability Factor index, these irons are as forgiving and easy to play as the Silverbacks and Callaways x-14 and x-16 models.
Finally, the proof to me was when I took them out on the course. I was hitting more consistent and solid shots with these irons than I ever have with any set I have ever owned (and I have owned quite a number of sets prior to these.) Feel was great, trajectory was high and piercing and distances were predictable and consistent. Forgiveness was exceptional on off center hits, only losing minimal yardage.
Cons: The only thing I do not like about this set is that I cannot locate the gap wedge compliment anywhere.
Quality: Excellent quality of construction. Thick, but not overly thick, topline breeds confidence. Progressive offset is just right. The short hosel makes for a very solid feel. Most of the weight is located on at the sole, which makes it easy to get the ball airborne on a high trajectory. The clubs are very understated and attractive. I love the Lamkin Crossline grips that are standart on the set. Very classy looking set of irons.
Review Summary: I would recommend these irons to anyone who is looking for ultra game improvement. Since I have been playing these irons, I have dropped my average score from the low 100's to the low 90's. I can now seriously see myself shooting in the mid 80's by the end of the year.
Sets previously owned: Wilson, Dunlop, Pro Select, Tommy Armour 845 (original and 2000 models), Cleveland (TA5 and TA4) and Orlimar.
