Purchase: I went to my local golf shop and spoke with the pro for 15 minutes about balls to suit my game. I just bought some new Ping G2 irons from him, so he knows my swing. He recommended the TopFlite Infinity Absolutely Straight balls for $19.95 a dozen. Pros: I don't like much about these balls. I went out to my local college course. I practiced chipping and putting, and these balls are almost as much of "Rock Flites" as the usual TopFlite balls I have played. I teed off, and immediately spun one out of bounds. My next ball was straight but shorter than my usual ball, Titleists.
I tried a few heroic shots over water, and luckily, dunked a few. Cons: These balls are Teflon coated, and just feel funny. They are tough to put an identifying mark on them, they're slippery in the hand, but hard off the putter. Tough to control, too, and too hard to get much control around the green. I'm going to use these when I have a long carry over water, but when I get rid of them, I'm going back to Titleist, NXT's for everyday play, and ProV1's for
tournaments and money games. Golf is about confidence, and these just don't give me the confidence that Titleist balls give. Quality: Review Summary: Honestly, these are better than Noodles, Slazengers, cheap Nikes, and other Wal-Mart balls, but not much, especially for the money at $19.95 a dozen. Better to spend the 20 bucks and get an 18 pack of Pinnacles. Cheap balls aren't worth it, and I predict these won't last on the regular market very long, and will hit the Dollar General when TopFlite stops making these gimmicky balls. Purchase: Just wanted to let everyone know that the previous review that I posted, I meant to rate the Top Flites a 1 out of 5; which means that I didn't think too much of them.
Just wanted to clear that up. Pros: Cons: Quality: Review Summary: On 2003-08-11, Gordy rated this Top Flite Infinity Absolutely Straight a 4...(2035)
Purchase: Last Saturday, I arrived at my favorite local muny to get in a very early round before the crowds began to show up. I had to wait a few minutes before it got light enough to tee off, so I was talking to the guy behind the counter to kill some time. We were talking about the strengths and weaknesses of our games; such as slicing and lack of distance. Suddenly, he told me to wait; that he had something for me to try out. He returned momentarily with a small two-ball sleeve of Top Flite Infinity Absolutely Straight balls. He told me that they really helped his game and that I should give them a try. Pros: About the only thing I liked about these balls were that they were free and that they were made by Top Flite; a name that is synonymous with quality distance balls. Up till then, I have been using Dunlop Locos and have been very pleased with the results that I have been getting. I figured that Top Flites would be even longer and straighter than my Dunlops. I was; however, disappointed with their performance. Cons: First of all, I was uncomfortable with the slick Teflon coating. Don't waste your time trying to put an identifying mark on these balls with a Sharpie. They just wipe right off.
Secondly, the Teflon coating is supposed to reduce hooks and slices. Well, my first tee shot was a spectacular banana slice, which just came up short of the heavy rough. I know that a ball cannot fix a bad swing; but my swing isn't that bad and, with the Locos, I would have been straigher and in the middle of the fairway.
Thirdly. Top Flite states that they are the longest balls off the tee. Well, these are definitely ten to fifteen yards shorter than my Locos. I know this because I played two balls on the first three holes; the Top Flite and the Loco. The Locos were by far straighter and longer than the Top Flites.
Fourth. The Top Flites state that they have an incredibly soft feel due to the large core and thin cover. To me, they felt way firmer than my Locos. Also, on approach shots to the green, the Locos flew higher and held the green much better than the Top Flites.
Fifth. Top Flites are supposed to be a bargain. FYI to all; the Locos are cheaper than the Top Flites by three bucks a dozen ($16.95 as opposed to $19.95.) Also, if you look around, you can pick up dozen packs of Locos with two extra sleeves added on for the regular price of a dozen Locos. Quality: For what they are, the Top Flites are okay. They are a two piece distance ball, which they have made a name for themselves for a long time. They do; however, come up short on their claims of extraordinary distance and soft feel. If you like a firmer ball, then these are just as good as any. Review Summary: In my opinion, if you are a recreational golfer like me, and want a good ball for the least amount of money; consider the Locos first. The Top Flites are a good ball, but fall way short of their claims of fantastic distance and incredibly soft feel.
As for me, I will stick with my Locos. Great distance, softer feel, higher ball flight, better holding power on the greens and, best of all, cheaper than the Infinitys.
