On 2004-10-21, Tim Kletti rated this Volvik Crystal Golf Ball a 5...(4656)
Purchase: My father brought a few sleeves back from Florida last winter. While playing a round with him, he tossed me the ball. My first impression was a bit skeptical. I have been A Pro V-1 player since you had to scramble to find a box a few years back. I had no intention of switching golf balls...not even interested in trying one.
With a bit of effort, my father convinced me to try it. "What the heck...There is no money on this round." Well, I have to honestly say, I said 4 times during that round, "that was the best shot I have ever hit."
Pros: 1) Ball flight is a bit higher than the Pro V1. If you have issues getting the ball up, this may be the ball for you
2) Durable as all heck. I have actual bounced a ball of the cartpath and have had to look closely to find the impact point
3) MAXIMUM distance....this ball gets up and goes!
4) Most players would love to spin a ball back, but never hit the ball past the pin. This ball spins a bit less than the Pro V1 and feels a bit "harder"...which is what I want. I want a ball to release a little bit more around the greens.
5) I can play 3-4 rounds on one ball before it shows any wear. One crisp wedge shot on a Pro V1 and you have a healthy scuff. Plus, one box (about $19.00) costs the same as a few sleeves of Pro V1's
6) As a previous review states, the ball sticks out on the course because the coloring of the core and clear cover just look different.
7) Great markings on the ball "<CONTROL>" Makes for a great putting alignment aid. Also, I have found this ball rolls very true.
Cons: 1)Retailers are pigeon holing this ball as a Womens/Senior ball. May have something to do with the optional rainbow colors they come in. I like what Precept did with the MC-Lady a few years back (marketing it to men based upon its' performance)...hopefully Volvik can trancend the boundaries.
2)Like many golfers, I am easily persuaded by namebrands. I am assuming that this ball will catch on and the issue will disappear.
3) It is silly, but I don't like having the numbers 5 and 7 on the golf ball...bad numbers for golf! They should stick with 1-4
Quality: Absolute top shelf quality and consistency.
Review Summary: Pretty simple. I carry a 1.5 USGA Index, I am not "stupid" long, but I can get it out there...this ball simply gave me what the Pro V1 couldn't...Higher ball flight, Distance, Putting performance, Consistency, and Price.
As I said before, I made the "best shot of my life" four times in the same round with this ball...the first time I used it. That is hard to ignore.
Don't let a "name-brand" or "Women's" ball label deter you from trying this ball!
