On 2002-10-07, David rated this Wilson Deep Red 425cc, 10.5 degree, stiff flex fat shaft a 5...(651)
Purchase: Purchased for $300 at Don Sherwood Golf and Tennis in San Francisco.
I could have bought a driver the pro's play (Titleist, Nike, TaylorMade, etc), but let's face it, my game is not worthy. I don't want a club that I can work left or right. I don't want a club that will let me know if I miss hit it. I don't play often enough, or well enough, to allow me to (publicly) dream of playing on the senior tour if only I had the right driver.
My criteria for a new driver was for it to be forgiving with consistently good distance. I wanted to be able to pull the driver out of my bag when I have not picked up a club in 3 weeks and still be able to hit the ball over 220 yards down the middle of the fairway.
The Wilson Deep Red fit my requirements. Pros: No doubt about it, the club looks great. And it performs great too.
I have a 15 handicap index and shoot in the low 80's when playing often, and in the low 90's when I'm not. My swing speed is around 100mph and I have a tendency to hook my drives.
The ball comes off this driver fast and just goes and goes. I now consistently hit 240 yards in the air rolling to 250-260. A few even carry 260. Control is great and the direction of the shot seems to be entirely due to my alignment and ball position at address.
Perhaps some people want more distance, but I would be very, very happy to consistently hit my drives 250 in the fairway. I find the large head on the Deep Red 425 gives me the confidence I need to swing freely without fear of mis-hits. And that is helping my distance too.
Even mis-hits, where I hit the ball towards the toe and almost miss the ball entirely, still travels 230 yards down the middle. That, my friends, is forgiveness. Cons: A louder than normal 'plink' at contact may be unsettling to some people. The large size head requires some getting used to. I wish the head cover was nicer. Quality: I will probably replace the grip. Review Summary: Looks great, feels great, results are great. What more could I ask for in a driver?
