On 2003-07-30, Joe from Fairfield CT rated this Wilson Deep Red II Distance Stiff a 3...(1931)
Purchase: I purchased this driver at Golfers Warehouse in Orange CT. I have to admit I was drawn to the club by its predecessors reputation, other people's reviews, weight, and look of the club. Orig $299.00, I paid $279.00 becasue they were runing a special 20$ off every driver that weekend.
Pros: To be honsets, there is not much I do like about this club. It is deffinately a great looking club with its deep red finish and black Graffaloy fat shaft. I always get comments about it on the tee. I like the Fat shaft concept and the weighting toward the back of the head club head. When I do hit this driver on the screws, which is rarely, I send it and it goes quite far. I am amazed at times at the distance.
Cons: Besides the asthetics and the occasional blast I launch from this driver, there is not much I like. I have not put my finger on it yet, but I tend to think it is the fat shaft. It feels like it numbs the feeling of the club as you strike the ball. Sometmes It feels like I am swinging a bat at times. Once this gets into my head I have low probability of hitting the ball. For every twenty drives I will hit one solid straight drive. Otherwise I am right and left all day. Now, I know I am not the perfect driver, but I was hitting my callaway Big Bertha Warbird driver much more consistently than this. I believe that Wilson has created a great product and many people seem to really enjoy this club. I have seen people do awazing things with mine. It just doesn't feel right in my hands at address. Even when I hit the ball on the screws the club doesnt respond to it. I never know if I hit it well or not until I get to my ball. I would say that this is a driver best suited for some one who has a slower swing speed. I tend to really go after it and this club does not respond well to my aggressive swing.
Quality: The club is well manufatured. The deep red finish is paint and it has a tendancey to chip. This can be avoided if you are consistent about putting your head cover on it after every use. The club is 400 cc with a fat shaft by Graffaloy, and a golf pride velvet grip. Wilson has really done a good job with this club and many people seem to like it's appearence and playability.
Review Summary: I trust it's a great club for a lot of golfers and I am willing to admit that I am more the problem than club. I probably should have taken it for a demo and fit properly for it. I wont make this same mistake twice. Overall I am not happy with this driver. Very inconsistent and non reposnsive to well hit shots. Now I am looking at the Clevland Launcher, the Taylor Made R500 and the new Ping. Hopefully I will have a better understanding of my requirements in a driver after I hit these.
