On 2004-12-30, RJ Man rated this Wilson Deep Red II Tour 9.0 a 5...(4902)
Purchase: I bought the club on Ebay for $130.00. Saw it on the range and liked the look of it so i tried one out. Liked the club and bought it.
Pros: First thing--this is not the fat shaft. Grafalloy prolite 35 stiff flex with 9.0 of loft. The shaft is a high quality shaft that loads up nice and when hit on or near the sweet spot it launches the ball quickly. The head itself has the sweet spot higher on the face than i am used to. Some balls i thought i hit flush would go shorter than those i thought missed high on the face. it was weird getting used to this feel but i have. I have a swing speed of 105-115mph and this club will get me 300 plus yards through that range. Nice trajectory lands soft and carries a long way. The look of the club inspires confidence. I never tee it up with this club and think "i hope i hit it in the fairway" I always think i will-- my main concern is where i want to hit it. I am not saying that i hit the ball where i want it to go--just that i always think i will have a good result. I think that is important as anything when it comes to reviewing a club--if you think you can hit it you probably can and if you don't you probably cant.
Cons: Has a bit of a dead sound when hit on the sweet spot and sounds like you crushed it when you miss. I have to work a little to make sure i don't give up on my swing--if i miss it it will be a big slice. However this is true of most 9 degree drivers. I did not like the factory grip but it was still high quality golf pride grip so that is more a preference thing than a jab at wilson. I am more disappointed with wilson itself for not marketing this club well. Most golfers today do not know that wilson made clubs that dominated the Tour they only know them as makers of "k-Mart" clubs so i am put in the odd position of defending my purchase. This stops after a couple of holes and then people want to hit it. Oddly the main thing i don't like about this club is what most people find most appealing about it--it's color--i would have liked it in black.
Quality: Very high--equal or better of other mass manufactured products high end equipment.
Review Summary: I think this is a tremedous club and an even better deal. It has a grafalloy shaft and a well finished titanium head for about a hundred dollars--hard to beat. If a friend was looking for a new driver i would steer him or her toward this club.
