On 2004-08-17, JBS rated this Wilson Deep Red 2 Iron / Stiff Graphite a 5...(4054)

Purchase: I bought two new (gave one to my son) from the same company on eBay for under $150 combined.
Pros: I always liked the two iron and it was the best club in my bag in my younger days. I was not dissapointed with this club. It hit absolutely straight. The fatshaft is as good as hitting steel (maybe better in stiff flex). It has complete feel and control for those who truly can fade a 2-5 iron through the woods, around a tree and down a fairway (it is not as hard as you might think...). The 2 iron adds distance that you'll love. It hits true and I have worked it both ways. The 18* set up equals a 5 wood loft so you can keep the 3 or 4 wood in the bag and add a hybrid or a wedge. The quality is exceptional as is the feel.
Cons: I can't tee it up but my son does and makes me proud. (It's just my iron mind set - I will not tee up any iron!)
Quality: This is a good looking - reliable and durable club. It is midsized - with more forgiveness than you would expect.

Review Summary: Long irons seem to be a lost art and I don't see many on the course these days. Long irons mean long and normally they are the 3-5 irons. If you can hit a 5 you can hit a 2 and with distance you'll love. Graphite has added a dimension to 2 irons that steel does not have (for me). Specifically that factor is workability. I can feel it in graphite better than I could in steel. I can handle the lighter feel and that makes it much more workable. Working a fairway wood is the only thing that comes close. A Driver or a mid-short irons works like any club should with some sense of accomplishment. Steel / graphite seem to work the same with the shorter clubs. I have found a stiff deliberate attack weapon in this two iron. I own some good clubs - 3 sets. For workability on the long irons (2-5)- I choose graphite. For the purest feel I choose the 2 iron. This club has brought back the great feel I used to get from a steel 2 iron 30 years ago. I don't think I expected to ever have a 2 iron back in my bag - glad I gave this one a try. Keep a hybrid - the purist understands the benefit there; but don't pass up the opportunity to feel the experience you go out there every round for.
