On 2003-09-16, Bernard Clark rated this Wilson Deep Red Tour II Steel Shaft a 5...(2313)

Purchase: Until this season I had been playing Lynx Black Cat 15-5 graphite shafted irons which I really liked and my handicap had come down to 18. My swing is fairly strong (or "wild" to use the technically correct term) and my pro suggested I try a set of steel shafted irons which I wouldn't be able to throw around so much. Wilson had a demo day at our club and so I tried out a set of Tour II as well as fat shafted irons. I'd never really thought about Wilson before and red is not really my colour so perhaps my expectations were not raised. The Tour II irons felt good from the start and because of the heavier feel I felt that I shouldn't swing so strongly. The wind was also blowing from behind that day and so I did not lose any length. I told my pro what I had done and he said that the clubs would suit me and offered to have a look at Wilson's next demo day. I tried the clubs again and they worked this time as well (again with a following wind). I ordered a set from the pro shop they cost 720 Euro (3-SW) and I got a fairway wood thrown in as part of the deal.
Pros: I've played them for a couple of moonths now and would never change back. They are more workable and I am actually getting a controlled draw now and a fade when I need it. I don't shank the ball like I used to. I think this is something to do with them being heavier and me having to sbsequently control my swing more. I was also wary of going to a less forgiving "blade like" design but was pleasantly surprised that shots that I did not hit properly did not result in the absolute disasters that I'd heard could be the case with clubs designed for lower handicappers.
Cons: The clubs age quite fast and marks easily but you can quickly see whereabouts on the face you are hitting the ball (in my case a bit too near the shaft to start with). The heavier irons also tend to strain the forearm muscles.
Quality: The clubs have steel shafts, look good from my subjective standpoint and as far as I can tell are qualatively constructed.

Review Summary: The heavier steel shafts have helped (forced) me to control my swing more which is what my pro has been trying to drum into me for ages. I now have a lot of confidence now with irons. I have a lot more control of the ball without losing any distance which was never a problem. The ball still bites when it hits the green, now its just hitting it more often. I'd rate this as to near as a five as I could get but please note thet this is my first ever change of irons and I still feel new equipment is no substitue for good tuition.
