On 2003-07-29, John Young rated this Wilson R.Mendralla Signature Irons w/ Fat Shaft a 3...(1913)

Purchase: I purchased my set of clubs from a local golf shop for $300. I was looking for a set of clubs that would at once offer me more distance and forgiveness.
Pros: I got the distance and forgiveness I was looking for. The R.Mendralla clubs in my opinion would be a solid club for anyone seeking a game-improvement club but who does not want to be saddled with a set of clubs more fit for branding cattle than hitting "golf shots." The R.Mendrallas unlike other cavity backs have a shallower cavity and so are not completely void of providing shot feedback.
Cons: the distance and forgiveness come at a pretty hefty price, lack of ability to work the ball...at all. The fat shaft certainly offers a lot of forgiveness and added distance. But I think the fact that is nigh impossible to work the ball effectively is just too much of a drawback for any low to mid-handicap player to truly consider these clubs (I am a scratch player) -- or any fat shafted club..
Quality: Construction and quality are good. The paint on the graphite chips pretty easily, however. I have had no problems with the heads though.

Review Summary: My purpose for buying these clubs is that I am not extremely long off the tee, and I tend to play from the back tees (at tournaments and such). I was just looking for a set that would provide me shot making with distance -- I am pulling out the seven instead of the six, but the ball just goes "too" straight. If you want distance and forgiveness (and a really straight ball), they're a good club. If you need/want to work the ball, look elsewhere.
