On 2004-09-07, Average golfer rated this Wishon Tamarron Grand Monarch 5 Wood a 4...(4304)
Purchase: This clubhead was ordered as a component directly from Wishon Golf. It was a liquidation sale on this model, so the price for the head was only $12.50 plus shipping and handling.
I had gone to the hybrid clubs to replace my 3 and 4 irons, and my old 5 wood was 20*. I needed a slightly stronger loft because I was hitting the hybrid longer than my old 3-iron. This clubhead is 18* loft.
Pros: I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of this clubhead. It has a beautiful deep, dark blue finish with a classy silver marking on the crown near the face to act as an alignment aid. It reminds me of a Mizuno branded club as far as style is concerned. I mated the club with a graphite shaft appropriate for my swingspeed and tempo, and ordered a Wishon New Wrap Grip, which was cheap enough at $1.60.
The club has a very solid feel at impact. The face is slightly deeper than most 5 woods, which makes it better in the rough. The clubhead is made of 15-5 stainless steel, which allows for a thinner face than 17-4 steel, giving a higher coefficient of restitution and a feel closer to that of maraging steel. Ball striking is crisp and sharp, and ball flight seems just right for an 18* loft.
The sole is beveled at the lateral edges, allowing clean hits off of tight lies, and glides well on turf.
Cons: This component clubhead is listed on line as being 216 grams, but mine came with a sticker listing the weight as between 224 and 225 grams. This means that one has to shorten the shaft slightly to achieve the desired swingweight.
The Wishon New Wrap grip is simply too small. It is listed as a men's standard but fits more like a ladies' grip. After one outing, I replaced it with a Golf Pride Tour Wrap grip. The grip had good tackiness and a fine feel, but Wishon should really work on the sizing of this grip.
Quality: The clubhead had superb quality construction. Wishon lists suggested swing speed ranges for their shafts, and the Wishon Interflexx shaft plays very well, and the suggested swing speed ranges seem appropriate, and even include slight trimming variations depending on one's tempo. The grip is high quality, both firm and tacky, but the sizing is a definite problem that needs to be remedied. I would recommend going with another company to supply your grip, or have it gripped at your local pro shop.
Review Summary: This is a good clubhead, a great value, and the shaft is very high quality with terrific graphics. The grip sizing is poor, but very inexpensive to remedy.
