I broke my 5I awhile back and miss it. It used to be my 160-170 club. I've been using my 5 wood for those distances but I have to take a little bit off of the swing to keep from going too far and that is not easy for me to do (I tend to slice it when I do it).

It is a wilson prostaff club (about 8 years old, got them for free ) with a regular flex graphite shaft. No indication on it what the weight is supposed to be. I recently had my driver swing speed measured at an average of 95 mph and purchased a stiff shaft R7 460 which is working well for me. Much more control and added distance over the older driver.

I have hit one of my buddies clubs that has light, stiff shafts and really liked the feel.

So, that said any recommendations on a shaft to put the club back into working order?

I really think I need new clubs (you can see where I hit the ball on the face of most of them) but for now I just want my 5I back. BTW, I don't want to hit it longer just more consistently if possible.

Thanks,

Ron Madurski

If it's a proprietary shaft, it might be a tough match, especially when it comes to graphite. Plus, graphite does tend to get softer when it gets up there in age like that. Might be time for a new set. Try contacting Wilson to see if you can get any info. But, I called another company about a set of irons that I have that was built in 2000 and they did not have the records immediately on hand. Wilson may not have them either.

Can you give a description of the shaft. What does it say on it?

Unfortunately, a new set isn't in the budget until at least spring. I could buy a set but there'd be nothing left over to go out and play

Anyway, for the problem at hand... The club shaft says:

W
1-800-go-wilson (I am going to call them, too)
Regular Flex

Engineered by Wilson and UST

100% Carbon Graphite

and on the other side it says:

W

ProStaff OS
Metal
Matched Technology
MMT

That's it.

Thanks,

Ron Madurski

Well, it doesn't have to be "new" to be different.
I buy lots of used clubs in primo shape.

That Wilson/UST shaft I bet would be darn near impossible to replace unfortunately. Heck for about twice what you would have to pay to replace that shaft you could probably cruise Ebay and find a whole new set.

Finnally got the club repaired. The guy that did it just redid the existing shaft using a plug at the top under the grip. Works well. He also used a tacky type grip and I really like it better than the cords I'm using now. We'll see how it holds up. With the cords I can just use a wire brush to rejuvenated them if they start to wear down.

Thanks,

Ron Madurski

That will work. Watch to see if it feels and launches differently than your other irons. What you have wound up with is a "Tip-trimmed" shaft. Tip trimming stiffens the shaft and can alter how high a club launches the ball. It may be subtle, or it may be very noticeable.
