What I don't understand is why slicers are still taught to have a 'strong' grip. It seems like the weaker my left hand is (or neutral position), the more control I have to draw/hook the ball. If I strengthen my grip, I will hit block slices. This is especially true with the driver.

Any thoughts or experience similar to this?

Are you sure you have your terms correct? The stronger the grip the less chance of hitting a slice. Stronger grip means your left hand is rotated more clockwise on the handle. Is this what you understand a strong grip to be?

Yeah, Hobert, I wonder if you're thinking that by strong, slicers are rotating their hand counter clock-wise which would be the opposite of a good thing.

Now I will have to admit that I don't use a stronger grip, mainly because when I'm thinking about my hands and where they are, nothing good ever happens..I usually find a way to hit the ball right even with a 'stronger' grip. So I just try to stay back and stay behind the ball more leaving my wrists and hands as they were. Or I'll setup facing right with the club face pointed toward where I want the ball to end up and swing according to how my body was aligned.

But messing with the wrists and hands (for me) usually leads to disaster.

Hi guys,

No, definitely not mixing up the terms...my left hand has the 'V' pointing at my chin as OPPOSED to my right shoulder. By weakening my left hand from that strong position, I am able to turn my wrists through the ball quickly and produce a controllable draw. There was actually a small article in either Golf or Golf Digest a few issues back.

I can't say why it works for you, but if it does, don't change it. It sure doesn't work for most golfers that hit a slice. A stronger grip does work for most slicers it they will just try it.

Rob, havin' sum fun now, huh?
Most certainly you have your right hand set strong on the club, so it doesn't matter that your left is set up weak because your right hand is dominating and rolling into the shot. This is producing a hook with a weak left hand grip. When you set your left hand strong, it becomes more dominant and your right hand is not rolling over, so you get a block shot and the ball goes right or slices.
Set both hands on the club with the v's pointing toward your right shoulder, and make sure your hands are up to or in front of the ball. Now, relax your right hand and arm and just swing the club.
If your shoulders, hips and feet are square, you will hit everything straight or with a slight draw. \:o

If all the above is a bit confusing, just set up with the V's pointing toward your right shoulder, relax your right hand and arm and hit the ball.

Bill,

Yes, I would agree with you that my right hand must be set in a strong position and being dominant over the weakened left one.

I am interested in trying your suggestion though. It seems as if the hands would work more in a uniformed manner.

Thanks,
-Rob
