Hi Don,
First let me ask... when you say "carry" over 225 yards, do you literally mean carry (air time) or are you including roll? Anyone who can "carry" over 225 yards is hitting it LONG, and has nothing to worry about.
While rarely does anyone identify it, often mid-irons are a player's worst enemy... i.e. they drive it okay, and if they are inside 150 they are okay, but that 2nd shot, of say 175 yards, can be their nemesis. Often because they are trying too hard, with too much emphasis on "perfect" approach shots. One of my articles, which I believe is scheduled to appear here on Golf Gear Review, talks about the over-emphasis (pressure) on hitting greens in regulation. Players who are often fine from 150 yards and 25 yards can't fathom the idea of hitting two such shots in their approach, so instead "try" to hit the perfect 175 yard shot and... chunk it, skull it, or hit it OB. Good golf is about good golf management. Anyway, I am getting away from your actual question! But I am doing so because I am going to give you a link to another article of mine: "Where Does Distance Come From?" (http://www.golf-gear-review.com/article-display/1075.html) which I think will answer your question. Let me know how you make out...
