I've been playing for over 40 years and have seen instructors teaching a variety of ball positions. I was originally taught to have the driver even with the left heel and move back toward the right with each club until the wedge is off the right heel. I've also heard driver off left heel, fairway woods 2 inches back, long irons 4 inches back, mid irons in the middle and short irons 2 inches back of middle. I was even once taught to play everything but the driver in the middle.

So what's the current thought? I'm really interested because my iron contact has been pretty inconsistent and I think ball position may be the reason.
