I tried the idea of pointing my elbow to the target, and it didn't work out for me. My takeaway started inside too fast. Which means you're probably starting your backswing with your hands and arms instead of your left shoulder. If you started with a shoulder turn, the arms would flow, on the right path, in one fluid motion. If you start your take away with your hands and/or arms, and your elbow is pointed toward the target, your take away will go inside. Maybe what you've been doing, and become comfortable with, is an interesting experiment!
