Have to admit my other hobby is very lady oriented which is crafting, particularly crochet. I find it very relaxing to sit and crochet while watching tv in the evenings.

I hunt, fish, play fantasy football.

I also read(if you consider this a hobby) mainly stuff on American History, Music(Rock Era) and anything by Tom Clancy. Have also read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy twice (including the Hobbit) and the Jason Bourne series.

I also watch a ton of TV, mainly History/Military Channel, Discovery/TLC, DIY, FoodTV.

Oh, and the looking stuff up on my hobbies on the internet to supplement my knowledge.

I like cooking, but tend to read more about cooking than actually doing it. The other web sites I frequent are all cooking and restaurant-oriented. There was a time in my 20's when I considered going to culinary school. I sail, but since it's my parent's boat, I'm a guest...and frankly I'd rather golf on the weekend. Fitness (gym), walking, tennis. Minored in art and did jewelry design in college and hope to get back in to that when I retire and have time on my hands.

I play guitar, keyboards, harmonica, and like to record my own music (although it's been a while since I've done that), and am reading my second Dan Brown novel - Digital Fortress.

Used to hunt and fish, and will probably get back into that a least on a limited scale to expose my son to it.

My hobbies go in waves. I get tired of something after a while and move on to something else, and then come back to each thing eventually.

I enjoy grilling, but regular cooking is done more of necessity than enjoyment.

I did forget to put Grilling as a hobby, mainly because, I just enjoy making steaks, chops, chicken, seafood, burgers, dogs, brats on the grill. Nothing better to clear the head than throwing some meat on a grate over an open flame while havin' a beer.

Competitive pistol shooting was my main hobby for years, but have scaled back a lot due to failing eye sight. Just can't see the sights well enough now. Now I mainly build golf clubs, and putt around

I'm pretty devoted to golf...
Past devotions: classical piano, distance running, rock and alpine climbing, ashtanga yoga, Argentine tango, medieval astrology.
Interests that are part of the current mix: personal and spiritual growth, reading, workouts (a mix of short hard runs, strength work, yoga). Healthy lifestyle -- I enjoy the heck out of this body, and want to keep it up for as long as possible.

I have an eleven year old son, not much time for hobbies. We do go camping and he just picked up my acoustic giutar. Trying to get back into that. He likes to go fishing and I take him to the driving range when I don't have broken bones. Still got 6 months left to finish my degree, then everything should open back up.

Golf is a hobby and, for a long time, to some degree now, my profession. Or at least how I made a living.
I enjoy reading. Have read all the Tom Clancy novels. Also like keeping up with the newest golf books.
I'm a co-commissioner in a fantasy football league, the other co is my WIFE!
Like my 42-inch plasman HDTV.
Like making friends in places like these forums as well!

I assist my husband who coaches in our school's summer baseball league. We have the little guys (coach's pitch). Our team this year were all beginners except for three. They did real well but lost tonight so the season is over for us this year.

Currently my hobby is my daughter, who has reached her 5-month milestone age. I don't have time for anything else.

Other than that, cigars, cooking (I try to recreate recipes I've seen on The Food Network), playing on my Playstation (if I ever get that chance again). I can't remember anything else at the moment (just started on my cup of coffee for the morning).

DocT. I remember those days. Nope, no time for hobbies. I somehow don't think my golf mania would be nearly as much fun now, if I didn't have those grown babies lurking around the country to leave phone messages saying, "Ma, call me if you ever come in from the golf course."

Oh come on Doc, you can hold the baby in one hand and swing a wedge in the other. Or take her outside and sit her in the baby seat while you chip balls in to a net...you just need to put some more thought into things...and while she's sleeping, take her to the range and hit balls as she sleeps in the infant seat....

Just tell the wife you're going out to drive her around and spend some quality time with her... smile

In the summer, when I am not at work my time is mostly spent at the beach. Golf is a new hobbie so I am dividing my time between the two this year. I find on my days off that I spend my mornings at the driving range followed by an evening at the beach.

jan, where do you live?

This reminds me that Ron tells the story that Jimmy Demaret was a pro in Galveston for awhile. He told Ron that he learned a lot about how to hit a golf ball by hitting balls out of the sand on the beach.

Jan, Why not combine your two hobbies and hit practice "Bunker" shots at the beach? No sense letting all that sand go to waste.

Just Please don't do this during a busy beach time...one of two bladed shots will have you chased from the beach by a group of angry sun-burnt people wielding plastic shovels and throwing beached Jellyfish...

I love this topic, it's nice to see what other people do besides golf.
I'm a crafter... I love to do any type of craft. I also have a daughter so she keeps me pretty busy. I help coach her softball team (they took the Championship this year). We also play volleyball and basketball together.
I love to read and I love to cook.

Jack,

Who do you root for in NASCAR? Are you a fan of the "chase" concept? I like the recent change to the double file restarts, but not a huge fan of the chase. I grew up listening to NASCAR on the radio while we would wash and wax the car outside on Sundays. Always been a Petty Enterprises fan even through the last 15-20 lean years, though I don't really consider their win 2 weeks ago really the same as a true Petty Enterprises win, but I guess is counts somewhere.

What kinds of crafts, sprouty? I don't really know what that is.

How old is your daughter? I helped coach my daughter's softball team years ago; it was fun.

My other hobby is playing poker. I absolutely love it. In some of the local poker room tournaments, I find that I pay less to enter the tournament than I do for green fees, and I almost always cash out.

I have a '72 VW Bug and enjoy taking her out for long rides. I also enjoy going to classic car shows. Other than that, I spend way too much time around the computer - which is why I took up golf, pretty much for the exercise.

Tiger, so riddle me this....What does the winner get out of a car show? I just went to one here about 5 minutes from me, pretty much cars from the '30s to maybe early '70s (as I remember a 'Cuda there was was more late model than the mid 60s models.) Anyway, so I was talking to one guy who said he bought his show car about a year before and had won something in each show he was at.

So the question: Do you win more than a trophy say like $$$ to help pay for the vehicles you buy? I can't believe you do especially given the shows around here are free to visit. I'm thinking you just love cars, you buy them because of that and you show them without ever having hopes of recouping the investment you make in the cars...Is that right? Sounds kinda like marriage. smile

I take pictures.. not the digital kind, the ones on film with old manual focus cameras. I have a couple of older Nikons, Minolta, Pentax..and still collecting photography books. Love messing with shutter speeds and f-stops, especially if the shot does not have to be hurried. OK for work and quick stuff I use digital

Heck, hardly a riddle there - well, except for the marriage part.:D. The shows I go to, we just do a wicked spit and shine and hope to get a "Best of Something" trophy. Sometimes there is some minor cash prize but it's not about the money but more about bragging rights among your buddies. Other than that, the shows are mainly a great way to get out with the family, drink some beer and munch on some dogs;

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Scott; Doesn't the DSLR camera have the same adjustablility as the standard SLR? I throutht that's the whole idea of the DSLR, to have the same camera only with digital memory instead of film.

basically yes. But to me, the people who worked with film and really knew how to use an SLR, knew how to do things with the camera that mere mortals can't do. Talking with folks about things they did in the dark room, etc, it's more art that us digital folks are removed from. I can appreciate folks with that skill because I see how hard it is even with the digital help. I can push buttons and have the lens or camera do something, and it just impresses me further with those that did that and more without the help of digital. It's like playing with people who can make shots happen in golf versus those of us who bang it and hope it goes straight. It's sort of art...to me at least.

No question there is an art to shooting with SLR vs DSLR. I took a fair amount of photography classes and had a friend who was a real camera geek and worked in a lab. You can't create the same effects in digital. It lacks a certain "heart".

It does Aimee. I would love to be able to have the time to go back and take those types of classes and learn about lenses and such some day. But I fear it's a dieing art because of the digital nature of things.

This reminds me of when I was looking to buy my SLR. I was lucky in that a good friend of mine was a professional and one of the best in Denver. I was looking at buying a Nikon with automatic everything, (FE) or one with manuel controls,(FM). He told me I would be able to take better photos with the automatic model, at first. BUT if I really wanted to LEARN how to take really good photos, I'd never learn how with the automatice model. So I got the manuel model and was forced to learn how to adjust it to get the shots I wanted. Never looked back on that decision, and sure glad I had a friend that was a pro to tell me what to buy.

Fred. I still have mine sitting in a closet with 3 lens somewhere. Don't know the last time I used it, as digital is so much easier and cheaper to use. You don't have the adjustable features of the SLR. but it's sure cheaper to use. No film the buy, no cost to develope or print.

I have way too many hobbies, and it seems all of them are expensive.

Golf, Fishing, Woodworking, Cooking, Computers, and my latest is club making.

I re-gripped my first club ever the other night, and I already have the components to make two drivers sitting under the carport.

I love to read. I will read almost anything and I like to try to keep a book with me at a lot of the time. If I have a down time I usually pull a book out.

I am a huge Penn State fan. I support all sports. I go to almost all of Penn State's home football games and a lot of the basketball games. If I can you will find me at other sporting events around campus.

I am a workout fanatic. I like to get my butt kicked. The feeling of soreness that comes from a tough workout is what I crave the most.

Finally, I like to cook. I love food so cooking is a must. I love to try new foods and flavors. Spicy flavors are my favorite. I also cannot beat a good steak.
