I am a rookie player but have had a lot of lessons. I just purchased a new driver and I love it. Sometimes I can hit my drive 220 yards and sometimes only 150 yards. It seams like when I use the stance I was taught I am consistant but never get much distance. When I take a more comfortable stance that is wider and lower I loose consistancy but gain distance. So I know I am able to hit it far. My question is: "is there a training aid that can help me? Something that has been proven that works?

The only thing that is proven to work?
Lessons with a PGA Professional. Then lots of practice. Trust me, it's the best way to improve. You are hitting inconsistently, therefore there is a flaw in your swing. A trained professional can help you fix that and get more consistent solid contact, which will get you more yardage. Gadgets are just ways for people to make money off people looking for "magic".

Ditto to what Aimee said. Gadgets don't usually help anyone but the seller. A few lessons with an instructor will do you wonders. A good solid base will do wonders for a swing. We could tell you now to decelerate and put your elbow here and there, but a pro can tell you and more importantly show you what those things mean.

OK thanks I was going to visit the golf store today but I am going to see if the pro at my course can give another lesson today. I think what I need to do is just practice what he is telling me till I get it right. That is what he tells me but easier said than done. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

We have all been thru it...you want to improve immediately but it takes a long time to get it going...when I worked on something with my teacher a while back it took about a month of heavy practice and playing for it to feel comfortable and certainly a bit longer for it to ingrain to be more automatic. Don't get discouraged, stick with the program.

By any chance, when you use your more comfortable stance, do you also RELAX MORE?. Your more consistant stance may not be comfortable, and that causes you to TENSE UP a bit. Try using the more consistant stance, and try to really RELAX your upper body. Relax your hand pressure on the club. Relax your arms, and shoulders. Try to stay relaxed for the whole swing, and see if this helps with the distance, while maintaining your more consistant swing. Please let me know if this helps.

And you never did tell me what loft your new driver is. I'd like to know what you got when you purchased your new shoes.

Like anything else, I would imagine this will become easier over time. I mean, it's easy to say relax your upper body but that is way easier to say than do. I think the relaxing might come with practice because you will eventually become more comfortable in the correct stance.
