I had heard about Ed McMann and Michael Jackson but I didn't realize that Farrah had also passed. I knew she was losing her battle with cancer and I am sorry to hear it. Way to many lose the battle with that disease.

I have been reading lately that their are simple natural treatments for cancer that are being suppressed by the Big Pharma/FDA/FTC cartel. Is anyone else familiar with this idea?

Laney, you haven't seen any of Kevin Trudeau's infomercials have you?

I just read a book I purchased through one of my natural oriented physician newsletters, called Cancer Free. Then, I happened upon Kevin Trudeau's book at my daughter's friend's house. Trudeau seems over the top phony, BUT, I practice many of the things he recommends, and I know very well that, of the things he says that I have personal experience with, he is right on. I also feel confident that the FDA is in cahoots with big pharma, but I am beginning to be afraid about the extent of it. I don't want vitamins to become prescription drugs. I don't want parents to continue to lose custody of their children for refusing to put their children through chemo. What do you know about Trudeau, Kevin?

Look at the Wiki page I linked to. He has been arrested and served time for Fraud, has been hit hard by the FDA and FTC for violations and outright lying.

I used to catch his infomercials all the time and thought "hey, maybe he's right" but then I started to read up on him. He's just a con man.

Below is a quote from the wiki page about his book, "Natural Cures 'They' Don't Want You To Know About"
Quote:
Criticism

Skeptical author Michael Shermer writes:

As for the "natural cures" themselves, some are not cures at all but just obvious healthy lifestyle suggestions: eat less, exercise more, reduce stress. Some of the natural cures are flat-out wrong, such as oral chelation for heart disease, whereas others are laughably ludicrous, such as a magnetic mattress pad and crocodile protein peptide for fibromyalgia. Worst of all are the natural cures that the book directs the reader to Trudeau's Web page to find. When you go there, however, and click on a disease to get the cure, you first have to become a Web site member at $499 lifetime or $9.95 a month. It is a classic con man's combo: bait and switch (the book directs them to the Web page) and double-dipping (sell them the book, then sell them the membership).[4]

Shermer and other critics have suggested that Trudeau has used Natural Cures to circumvent a Federal Trade Commission decision ruling that Trudeau is barred "from appearing in, producing, or disseminating future infomercials that advertise any type of product, service, or program to the public." The FTC issued its decision after it found that Trudeau had defrauded consumers by making numerous false claims about his merchandise in infomercials.[5]

Others have criticized the book for making incoherent claims like "If your body is alkaline, you cannot get cancer. . .and if you have cancer, it goes away."[6]

The book makes extensive unreferenced claims that some drugs cause such conditions as AIDS, headaches, bloating, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, allergies, asthma, fibromyalgia, arthritis, diabetes, constipation, yeast infections, dandruff, acne, halitosis, fatigue, depression, stress, and inability to lose weight.

Laney, working at an academic medical center where we do tons of cancer research, I would say no, I don't think the pharma companies are sitting on natural treatments. Groups like ours test tons of things for effect and most have no connection or responsibility to big pharma so I without strong verifiable data, I wouldn't believe it.

I think the most promising solution is what the Canary Project is doing, putting focus on early detection tests instead of cures. According the an article I read we spend 90% of the money spent on cancer on trying to cure cases and only 10% on early detection, when 90% of the cases caught early are curable. Seems like a no brain-er to start spending more money on tests trying to catch it early where we the cure rates are so much higher.

Thanks for the responses, you two. I can believe that Trudeau is a con man, but I still think there is some truth behind his con game. If he only helps get public awareness, I guess that is a good thing.

For example, artificial sweeteners, I have read in many places, are made with the same chemical that is used as a nerve gas. Many studies indicate that they promote weight gain. This information is out there, but how many people know it?

That magnetic mattress pad example. At one time, I assumed that was a hoax. Now that I've studied energy medicine some, I know that the Chinese acupuncture meridian system has been scientifically validated. I know that I successfully use tapping on meridian points for healing various things. I know that study after study links cell phone use to brain cancer. So I will probably check out the magnet thing.

Still, Trudeau seems to use scare tactics and exaggeration. At least, I hope so. Scott, I'm really glad to hear that researchers at your center are studying alternative treatments and are not taking money from the pharma companies. I would love to hear about some examples. It would help me sleep better at night.

Laney.

There may be some truth, but calling these "Natural Cures" is very misleading. Most con men will use a little bit truth and a whole lotta lie to get you to fork over money for their gain.

Most of his cures, from what I quickly read are not cures, but common sense preventatives. Eating better food, exercising are not gonna 'cure' obesity, but it can prevent it.

Is there truth in what he is saying, a little, but the truth that he speaks of is common sense stuff, the rest are definitely scare tactics to buy his book and then to buy into his website.

Kevin, thanks for the response. Everyone: Switching the subject just a little... what percentage of Americans do you suppose know just how big a part lifestyle (e.g., food, exercise, drug, sleep, attitude habits) plays in their health? If you think most Americans do know, then why do you think so many of them adopt poor habits?

Why? because it's easy. And because we have adopted a lifestyle of doing way too much to the point that we do not have time to take care of ourselves.

Case in point: I had a guy ask me about my blackberry and all the new technology, and did I think we were getting more accomplished. My response was: We're doing more but caring less. And I think that's the same with health. It's too easy to NOT exercise or to go to drive-thru's instead of cooking at home. Both parents work, kids have after-school stuff and play dates, etc, and parents are tired.

So it's sad that many of us are too busy to take care of our own health, especially since the result of NOT doing it is poor health, shorter life, more health problems and less time to spend with our families.

The poorest people, who can't afford healthcare, have the worst health. It's cheaper to eat junk than it is to eat healthy food. School lunch programs, which could start kids into a path of being more aware of healthy eating, are driven by the lowest cost. So the kids get processed junk food and go home and eat Mickey D's for dinner. Heck, at the YMCA that we go to, I see so many more obese kids than I saw when I was a kid...they are grabbing 16 oz Gatorade - which their parents buy them- in their chubby hands - which is all sugar and empty calories.
Our company's health insurance used to offer a cash "rebate" of maybe $150-200 if you logged so many hours at a gym. If we credited people who take responsibility for their health and penalized those who don't, maybe some people would think more about it.

I was just stunned by all of the passings, and we've lost more, too, including Gale Storm who was so popular in the 50's and 60's. I don't know that I consider Billy Mays a celebrity, but his face was certainly out there. It's been an incredibly shocking week in terms of well-known losses.

I consider Billy Mays a celebrity, he was widely known through his commercials and stared in "Pitchmen" on the Discovery Channel. Plus he was from McKees Rocks, PA (just outside of Pittsburgh) so we here in SW Pa lost one of our own.
