New swing not working for me

I tried the new “Stack & Tilt” golf swing. I did not like it too much as I kept coming down too steeply on the ball. Now having returned to my old swing I can’t stop taking the club too far inside in my backswing. Now I am swinging around my body. Any suggestion how to cure this?

Thanks guys. This is what is happening. When I take the club too far inside it wraps around my body and at the top of the backswing the club is below my shoulders (more across my chest)instead of over my shoulder, so on my downswing I tend to cut across the ball rather than hit down the target line, hence slicing the ball or come over the top. When I get too conscious of this, I over-compensate by taking the club too straight back and end up pushing the ball.
I tried the suggestion to take the club back with my shoulders - in front of the mirror - as I won’t get to the range before this evening. But in front of the mirror it seems to work if I take everything back together (both shoulder and arm). I will get to the range later this evening and tell you guys how it works.

When I take the club too far inside it wraps around my body and at the top of the backswing the club is below my shoulders (more across my chest)instead of over my shoulder Hi Tig, glad to have you here. We all agree that taking it back w/left side is good. FWIW, I have gotten into the pattern you describe above. It sounds like you've nailed your problem yourself. This is what helped me get back on track: I remember that the arms move with the body -- my hands get no further than my back shoulder, never outside. To feel what I mean, get in address position and make the arm motion of the swing without the body turn. That's all that the arms do. If you were standing straight and you bent your elbows to lift your arms, the club would come up and hit you in the face. But, if you are right handed, your right shoulder is dropped in proper address position, so when you bend your arms, the club comes up in front of your right shoulder. Now, that's a drill. In a real swing, the arms will move in the same way, but the movement is not powered by the arms. The momentum of the body propels the arms, and the more relaxed the arms are, the farther the ball can go.

As I promised, I went to the range to work on my game and later played a practice round. I discovered that using the shoulder to take back the club works well especially if I ensure that it is always in front of my toes. Making sure the shoulder is outside your toes keeps the club in front and I don’t have to worry about it going inside too much at all. Let's see how my game goes from here on.

So at the range today, I was hitting some long irons, 3/4/5 irons, which I haven't been using. But I decided I'd bring them out and see how it went. Bad at first but then I realized I was too tense, trying to "hit" them hard with tense forearms. Didn't work at all. So then I relaxed, swung smoothly and boom, they were launching like clock work.
So just a word to the wise, RELAX your arms. The clubs WILL do the work. if you get too tense and think things like "I gotta hit this hard..." it will fail badly... Couldn't agree more, since that's what our clubs are made for. right? For a long time i struggled with this idea, especially since hitting it harder = distance in almost any other sports!
