As I was reading another thread about different golf balls, I began to wonder if it was feasible/possible to fit a player for a type of golf ball in a similar way that it is possible to be fitted for golf clubs.

When the PGA was here in memphis the last time I went they had a bridgestone "tent" setup where you could hit with all their different balls and see which gave you the best results.

While it's not as common, and I'm not certain how accurate it would be, I do believe it is possible.

Tiger, to a point yes. Most of the attempts look at your ball flight, swing speed, and spin that your shots produce and pick a ball from that companies line of balls that would in their mind, most suit your game. So yes but there likely is a fair amount of gray area around every choice. They'll try to balance the numbers they get off your driver shots and your iron shots and come up with something that may be a good balance.

Golf Galaxy sends me emails from time to time saying that they will be having a special event in the store, and sometimes they offer golf ball fittings.

YES Tiger, you can get fit for a golf ball. The best ball for YOU, would depend on YOUR swing, YOUR clubhead speed, and YOUR spin rate and launch angle. Add in how good you are, and you can find what balls best suits YOUR game. A lot of golf shops now offer ball fitting, and a fitting might be worth the cost if you are a decent enough golfer. The type of course you play can also have an effect on what ball you should be playing. I play on courses with hard greens, that don't hold a ball very well. So I like to play a high spin tour ball so I can get as much backspin as I can get, so I have a decent chance of having my ball stop close to where it lands on the green.

Sounds like a lot of marketing hype by the ball manufaturers to me. From what you guys have said, I think MY game is too inconsistent as it is, to be worried about the right ball.

My father-in-law insists on playing Pro V1s because of the 'feel'. He then goes out and shoots in the 100's. I tell him that he would probably shoot lower with a 'distance' ball with less spin (and save some $$). Maybe one day he will give the Pro V1s to me and hit Pinnacles or Top Flites. ;-)

hobert, You might want to give your fiw a MaxFle Noodle, long and soft. I doubt he could tell the difference from his $47 a box ProV1's.
