So I am sitting here with a giant dressing covering half of my nose. I had another spot of basal cell which had to be removed from the side of my nose. Another spot that I would never have assumed was cancer by it's appearance, so it's good that my doctor is very cautious and thorough ever since I had the one spot on my leg. The good news is that none of the dermatologists have said I shouldn't go in the sun, I told them I use SPF 30 sunblock and they said that's fine. I'm guessing since if it were a more serious type of skin cancer (ie, melanoma) it would be a vastly different story.
Interesting procedure, called Moh's micrographic surgery. It is used on the face because it minimizes scarring and also has close to 99% success at removing cancer on the first shot.
A bit sore, I did get stitches which have to be removed next week, but for now extra strength Tylenol is doing fine.
So just another friendly reminder for everyone who spends a lot of time in the sun...get a skin cancer screen.
Once I have my new cart, I'm going to use an umbrella to shade myself when I walk. There were some brutal days this summer.

Thanks for the update Aimee. Hope your nose gets back to birdie-sniffing shape soon. You know, a lot of days I don't wear any sunscreen. if its majorly hot or full sun sure but most days I just go. But thus far I've been lucky. I should do a better job of managing it and I'll find time to head your recommendation of getting a screening...

The spray on sunscreen is a good option because it doesn't make a goopy mess on your hands...the "sport" formulas do a pretty good job of staying on your skin. I just put on sunscreen before I leave the house to play golf, it is part of my routine, whether or not it is full sun.
Some facts:
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime
Between 40-50% of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once

Like I've told many people, based on my experience of what turned out to be cancer, I would have never spotted it. I would bet there are many people walking around with treatable cancer who don't even realize they have it.
Not trying to be an alarmist, but it's stupid easy to treat in the early stages so why not get checked out.

And speaking of the spray on stuff, not sure if they have them near you but the Dollar Tree has had them all summer for $1 a can. Hawaian Tropic name brand stuff. So I stocked up and got like 8 cans. Hard to believe the price and it is much easier to use. So i have no excuse...

So far I've been doing fine. Went to the doctor the last two years for skin checkup. She saw a few things she didn't like to looks of, other then just me that is. Took a small skin sample to test, but they both came back negitive, so I quess I'm okay for now. My wife ALWAYS uses sunscreen when we go out to play golf, but I NEVER DO. Not saying this is smart thing to do, but it's me.

That's good that you got checked out, Don. I've had 2 other things biopsied that came back negative, also. Better safe than sorry, of course! When I was at the doctor, there was a 87 year old woman having something removed from her ear, another senior woman (late 60's), a lady who may have been in her mid-50's, and me in my mid-40's...so a whole range of ages!

Unfortunately, cancer spares no one. That's why it's good to get any spots/mole checked out.

Got the stitches out today, thankfully not painful. Doc was very pleased at how well it healed, I should have no scar. A little red still and swollen, he said that was from the stitches inside and will go down over time. The worst part of the week was the irritation from pulling the bandaids off twice a day, glad to be done with that and let my skin calm down. Only have to cover it up when I go in the sun.

Glad to hear all is going well with your nose. And don't worry about the big red nose. You'll just look like you had a few too many drinks last night, and you'll have a built-in excuse if you don't play your best the next few rounds. Play it right and you might be able to talk someone into giving you a few extra strokes to make up for being hung over.
