What is your "go to" club if your ball is sitting in the rough, not totally buried, and you want to chip and run a bit towards the hole (not across the green, more like 5-10 yards).
Just curious, because I've played a bit with an old gap wedge (Ben Hogan Riviera) and I'm finding that it works better than I expected with the lower loft than the SW I was using. I'm wondering if the smaller head size/bounce of this particular club is making it easier for me to make solid contact? It is 52 degree loft and 8 degree bounce.
I'm looking at a used Cleveland CG14 gap wedge on Ebay which is 52 degrees and 10 degree bounce, because the Hogan wedge had been cut down an inch and the full swing distance doesn't fill the "gap" between SW/PW.

I usually go to my SW. If I need to run it any further than 5-10 yards I will use the GW.

I use Callaway X-tours with custom grinds by BombSquadGolf.

Chipping is more of a feel thing so go with whatever club you have the most confidence in.

Aimee; you could have a shaft extension installed in your Hogan wedge to bring it back to full length. And the loft could be bent to 51* to add a bit of distance to the club so your yardage gap is correct.

ME, I nornally use my lob wedge from the rough around the green. But then I"m playing a Pitch, not a chip. For chipping around the green, I usually use my 7 or 8 iron. Been using my 9 iron a lot lately, but that's due to not getting the ball up enought lately with my 7 iron.

I use my 64degree X wedge for short distances IF the lie of the ball isn't too uphill. If it's too hill, the 64 might go right under the ball so I grab a SW. If the ground is kinda soft, I drop down to my PW because the club usually sticks in a little more to the turf. and if its real bad and soggy I'll grab a hybrid and make a soft soft putting stroke but the ball will usually go further than 5-10 ft.

Don - I thought about the shaft extension thing, had thought about re-shafting, too. Seems that I can get a whole new (preowned) club in better condition for less money. I'll see what they say at the golf shop. I don't might the ultra light steel shaft, it feels pretty close to my graphite shafts, unlike the standard steel shafts which are noticeably heavier.

Shaft extension only cost about $3 at Golfsmith. And you could DO the work yourself if you want to same money. Pretty simple to install. You could even use a piece of hard wood for an extension if you want to save even more money on the job. You just epoxy it into the end of the shaft and install a grip. Pretty simple and cheap to do.

Thanks, I did see that it's pretty cheap to have Golfsmith do it, so it's a good option. I also like the idea of changing the loft to 51* at the same time. Still a pretty cheap way to fix up the club and play with it a while until I decide if it's staying in the permanent roster.

Aimee; With both you and the hubby playing golf, it would be well worth your time to LEARN how to replace your grips yourself. Golfsmith has a free 1/2 day clubmaking class you could take and learn all you need to know to replace grips and how to do a simple club build. Not going to learn about spine alignment or FLO alignment, but you will learn the basics of building a club, and that's more than enough to be able to replace grips and add a shaft extension as needed. Should save you enough money to get one more lesson I'd think.
