Hi there.
I am a beginner golfer and I was shopping for a set today and bought a $200 Acuity Golf Set from Dick's.
I got home and browsed the web and found a post about an Acuity Set in this forum. Now, I feel that I might have made a mistake.
Any other feedback about the Acuity sets?

thanks

FMG,

We haven't heard the final results of Cao's problem with his set. I know Dick's sells a lot of Acuity products and the GM I spoke to on Cao's behalf said they get very few returns. Don't get gun-shy over a single problem.

That said, I think most of the regulars on this site would have suggested that you get at least a token fitting before buying off the rack. That wouldn't have to be a custom fitting at this stage, but at least checking for grip size and clublength. Dick's pros are capable of that.

Once you've got your swing down and have gotten thoroughly addicted to the game, find a clubmaker in your area and get a complete fitting. Dick's is not set up for that, as there is much more involved than a couple of measurements and hitting into a net.

You don't give your location, but if there is a Golfsmith store in your area that is a good place to start. Or you can contact Golfsmith and they can direct you to a CGA member in your area.

Welcome to the game. Misery loves company.

Thanks JW.
I live in Atlanta, and I went through my first six beginner golf lessons at the range. It was all about the swing and posture. I used the instructor's clubs during the classes and borrowed one from the range when I was practicing alone. The latter caused the worst couple of blisters I've ever had
I never thought of a fitting. Will they change the grip on the clubs that I bought?

Ouch! The grip on the range club was probably old, slick and worn. That can cause all kinds of problems.

Some Dick's stores will change grips, but it will probably be a little pricey. Instead, I highly recommend a trip to your local Golfsmith store. The Atlanta area has 3.

They will have on-site fitters and clubmakers and their floor staff, in my experience, are very knowledgeable. It will be well worth the trip and they can probably regrip your clubs properly while you wait.

about a month ago i bought the Acuity GS.1 i hit them fairly well... i am a beginner as well and thought this set would be good to get started...well over the weekend i found out someone i know works at Dicks and he said people bring them back for broken shafts usually around the hosel. and now i dont know what to do myself! i hit them well which is good but at the same time i can miss pretty bad as well... which is not good and hence the possibility of breakage...called Dicks if they are used they will give you a price on condition of clubs if used... there you will NOT get full refund but recieve appropriate credit toward a better more expensive club... but i think if they are brand new you get full refund but you need the box they came in
hope this rambling helps..let me know what happens as i am in the same boat...

go in person to store and hold it down (not up..lol)...in person is the best way on the phone they give you the run around

I'm not sure what to get even if I return the set to Dick's. I got them for about 200 bucks, and I don't think I can get a better set at Dick's without having to double that.

I still have the box, so I guess I can return the set for a refund and maybe get the "Golden Bear?" from Costco.... Is that much better?

yup same thing going on here...i figure just hold on to them and see what happens. and your right by the time its all said and done they'll give you $100 for these and say here by these at 500 and you'll have no problems...
maybe print this discussion out (if its cool with everyone) and show them the problem lies with the clubs not the person.
becuase the guy that i know from the store up here said people bring them in all the time.
i will be going to dicks tomorrow night cause he works then, and i'll see what i can do

I broke my 3w 9 days after I bought the set. Dick's replaced it no questions asked, broke it again just about a week later (yesterday). Going to go back there again today.

Mike,

If you broke the replacement, that is more proof that there is a process problem with the manufacturer. Given that, if I had those things and returned them I would expect full value rather than a 'used' amount. If that didn't happen right away I'd start moving up the food chain until it did.

i have yet to hear anything bad about them, while i have yet to hear anything good about the acuity sets.

Back in the '70s, the Golden Bear line was considered a good, solid beginner-intermediate set. If Jack's company is still affiliated with it, as it now manufactures the Hagen line, I wouldn't hesitate to spend the few extra dollars.

Update:

I took back the broken replacement to Dick's. They were great, they were going to replace it again no questions asked. I asked them if I could return the set for full refund and upgrade, and they said that would be fine. I told them I didn't have the box, and they said that was OK. I decided that I like the clubs (that didn't break) and the bag, so I asked them if I Could pick anonther brand 3w and keep the set. They told me to pick one out and they would check to see what they could do. They wound up giving me an Adams Golf GT for $25. That was my choice. They gave me plenty of options, and was very pleased with the way I was treated.

Thanks
Mike

I suggest that everyone having problems with the Acuity sets go to www.dsports.com and contact Customer Service. Obviously, there is a manufacturing issue and the stores cannot be relied upon to bring this to Corporate's attention.

i bought these clubs back in April and have had no problems ... how are they breaking, where are you hitting the ball? are you hitting the ground before the ball and thats how or what? would like to know so i can avoid this happening and of course the 3w is what i use most!
other than this problem i think its a nice set

im no golf pro by any means, but the hit that broke my club was dead on the ball. it actually felt like it was one of the best shots (contact and form wise) that ive ever made.

The problem descriptions I've read all point to a process problem in manufacturing. The clubs all break at the hosel. This indicates that the assembler either didn't prep the tip of the shaft properly or the hosel was not coned. Either way, it's got nothing to do with your swing.

yes i have read and heard about the hosel situation. i was just wondering since it seems beginners have these clubs and we do not tend to hit perfect everytime and i know i'v hit the ground once...ok maybe twice.
i guess i'm just gonna ride these clubs out so far have had no problems.
how do oyu like the clubs otherwise jjw901?

Put that putter together so I know how you like it after the changes I made for Amy. Later, Don.

i returned my set today. dicks didnt even question me. they didnt even look to see if everything was in the box, and they gave me cash back. this was my first set of clubs, so i dont know if my opinion on them is valid. however, the irons seemed ok, as did they hybrid 3. i wasnt too fond of the grips, and the graphite shafts on the woods just felt cheap to me.

i looked around at some other sets, and couldn't find anything i liked that was reasonably priced. i did see a set of adams GT2 irons that were on sale for $199. they were really nice, and i liked the way they felt. i may consider purchasing them, but then i have to find a set of woods. dicks didnt really have anything that i could afford when it came to that. i really liked the adams irons, perhaps they make an affordable set of woods? anyone know?

thanks in advance.

FYI, Dick's does check this site occasionally so maybe what's been written here about Acuity is helping after all.

The Adams GT2 irons aren't bad - one of my regular group has them and hits the ball pretty well. Dick's has been running in-store specials on Orlimar and Tommy Armour woods lately - you might want to check them out.

Also, see if you can find a clubmaker in your area - they often carry used clubs. Speaking of used clubs, there used to be a franchise called 'Play It Again Sports' that was almost entirely used equipment. Edwin Watts is another store to check - my daughter got her Mizuno irons there for under $200.

Know this is an old thread. Purchased a set of Acuity clubs, 2nd time to driving range and I broke the head off the driver and the 5 wood. Returned to Dicks for full refund. Went out same day and purchased a set of Golden Bear jack Nicklaus Signature Series clubs for $280 at Costco. Seen them on Ebay for around $450+, so hopefully these will hold up better.

WARNING: Anyone thinking of buying a "starter set", would do well to read all the tales of the Acuity saga. Cheap isn't always the best price in the end.

I purchased this set from Dicks and havent had a problem with it.. yet..

I will definitly get back and go at it .. I can imagine how embarassing its going to be if im out at the driving range and I bust off one of the heads of the drivers...

Thanks for the heads up guys. I will definitly be keeping an eye on the clubs to see if there is any wear and tear.
