A friend and I want to spend a few weeks on the road hitting courses in the U.S. that are near different urban centers but are kind of undiscovered gems -- as opposed to the tried and true -- in terms of challenging play and great scenery to boot. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Many thanks.

So, if you're coming the central North Carolina area, I'd suggest the following courses:

Tobacco Road ( http://www.tobaccoroadgolf.com/ )
Rock Barn Golf ( http://www.rockbarngolf.com/ )
Oak Valley ( http://www.oakvalleygolfclub.com/ )

There are tons of other great courses around here as well including those in Pinehurst and the Myrtle Beach area, all with lots of great courses.

What part of this rather big country do you intend to visit? If you get to Denver, check out Fossil Trace, and Arrowhead. Two nice courses with lot of nice scenery.

Our itinerary is open. We're driving cross country in the late spring so we're open to any suggestions. I'd just like to play courses that are not well known but with really great play.
Thanks for the suggestions

There are some really great 9 hole courses spread around, especially in Ct & Mass. Let me know if you're coming up this far north and I give you a listing.

Well if you want great tracks that aren't real known, my previous suggestion of Oak Valley, a Palmer course, is a good choice. 7200+ yards from the tips and very nice conditioned course, and no one knows about it. Tobacco Road isn't quite that unknown as it's listed on Golf Digests Top 10 hardest courses in America, along with Tot Hill farm which is within an hour of Tobacco Road. Both very tough tracks but The Road is my favorite of the two. Rock Barn's got a SPGA tour event there each year so that might not be so unknown for you.

Well, me and my buddies are intending to go to the area of Hampshire College because due to my buddy there should be a nice golf course in that area. Does anybody know if that's true? Thanks in advance for the information.
