I was thinking of trying the Guerin Rife 2 Bar Offset Putter, does anyone have experience with this club? I would oike some feedback if anyone has tried this putter. All the reviews look promising and at $180 I was throwing it out there for discussion. I currently have a Ping Anser but dont feel good about it. Suggestions?

Chief, I have a Guerin Rife 2 bar. For me it lines up great on 10 foot in putts. It also rolls the ball very well. I liked it best on slow greens. I couldn't control distance on longer putts as well as my "Anser" type putter so I went back to it. (It's a Yes, Dianna)

That doesn't mean you'll have the same results I had. The Guerin Rife has great balance and feels good when you stroke it. See if you can get your shop to let you take one on the course. If they won't, go in the day before you play, buy the putter, use it without getting any marks or dings and if you don't like it, take it back for a refund. The finish is hard anodized so you won't scratch the sole. (Assuming you don't use it in a trap).

Bobby, it is a mallet and the rails have adjustable weights.

Bill do you think that the speed control would just take getting used to the putter? If I could have knocked off just a couple putts last round I would have broken into the 70s. The putter I am using now was just a spur of the moment decision. I got to the course last year and did not have mine in the bag so I bought the cheapest one in the clubhouse. I had an old Black Max but loved that thing, still cant find it. I probably left it on some course somewhere.
I heard a lot of guys like the heavy mallet style putters. What is your take on them?

I, for whatever reason, have a problem controlling distance with a mallet. I use a Yes, Dianna model putter, which is a Ping Anser design.

What makes putter selection difficult is they may work one day and not the next.

Play with some putters, find one you putt out of sight with, play around with it and then put it back on the shelf. Do this two more times, during the week, and if it still feels better and putts better than anything else, buy it. Then, use it until either you or it dies.

I love mallets...I actually think I can control distance better with them. For a long time I used a Ray Cook mallet putter and it was awesome but when I thought I didn't make enough birdies, I changed my putting stroke which didn't work and so then I switched to the PING CRAZ-E putter and really like it. Just seems like with all that weight behind it, I don't need to hit anything hard...just a smooth stroke.

I would also add that you should consider getting fitted for a putter, meaning getting the length of the putter cut right to how you putt. I use a 33" putter while the norm is probably more like 35".

One of the nice things about building my own putters is that if I don't like the way it works, I can re-design it until it works the way I want it to. Right now, I'm quite happy with my design and have no plans to ever buy a putter again.

I had a chance to try this out at Golf Galaxy the other night. The weight distribution makes for a very effortless swing feel.
I never liked the feel of a mallet-style putter...but the other putter that really surprised me was the new Odyssey White Hot Sabertooth. It's really ugly, but dead accurate for me (at least putting on carpeting inside the store!).

Aimee, I tried one of those in a shop and also found it to be very accurate.
Aimee, if we pick a putter that's too good and we don't want to blame ourselves, what would we do on a bad day?
I say, "pick a putter you can't control and place the blame where it belongs."

True, that, Bill...if the carpenter has the best hammer and still hits his thumb, who can he blame?

Went out shopping last night for a putter at Golfsmith. I did not buy the guerin Rife as I thought I might.

I did try out a lot of putters. Here are some I really liked:
Odyssey White Hot tour
Ping Craz-E
Ping Piper
Rife 2 bar hybrid
Taylormade Rossa Susuki
Bettinardi BC32
Odyssey Sabertooth

Of all of them I really liked the Ping piper that is heel shafted. Really nice and smooth but I hit it slightly off line. Nice distance control, but again this is in the store on their practice greens.

I finally bought the Sabertooth. After almost 4 hours, I finally picked up this guy. I drained 5 of the first 6 putts from more than 20 feet. I started to hit from the same spot to each of the 5 holes and the distance control and accuracy was amazing. I found it easy to forget about the big 'fangs' off the back and concentrate on the alignment marks and stroke pace.

Well we will see if I can cut down on the putts this Saturday when me and a buddy plays 18. My putts per round have ranged from 22 to I think as many as 47, and the overall scores have been proof. Lets hope we can get 30 or less this week. I will let you know later.

You have the Sabertooth too? I noticed I have more distance and better alignment off mishits compared to my Odyssey WH 2-ball SRT. Getting a pendulum swing is so simple with minimal twists with this putter.

Did you find that poker chip in the headcover?

Doc,
I just bought it last night. I cannot give any specific detail currently. They were out of head covers, mine will be shipped within a week, so no poker chip yet. I am looking forward to using this guy on the course Saturday. In the store on their practice greens I impressed myself.
You made a statement about accuracy, how is the distance control? That is where I need the most help, as of late. That will turn my 4 putts into 2 putts. I thnk I can consistently bring my scores back into the eighties with better distance control. I can pretty much nail almost anything less than 6-8 feet. If I can get this down, then I work back to pitching and chipping for the next cut. I played with a guy last Saturday that pretty quietly shot an 80, mostly due to his putting then his approach. Only 230-240 off the tee, but nailed the putts and approaches. SO I want to work green backwards to lower my scores.

Good luck Chief. I found the same thing when I demo'd that putter, everything was going in the cup. I've got the itch, I have a $50 credit at a golf club that I won at a golf outing, I may just use it foolishly and let the Pro Shop order one for me. No doubt the putts/round are the biggest factor in consistent low scores.

Aimee Thanks. But I dont think buying a club you feel comfortable with is foolish. Nothing but good can come out of it at this point.

As with any new club in the bag, you need to practice with it first. My distance with the sabertooth was different with my 2-ball SRT, especially with the mishits. On the practice greens, I was nailing some long putts with the sabertooth.

Thanks Doc for the commentary.
Aimee dont let initial enthusiasm turn to discouragement if it does not live up to expectations. I agree with DocT practice and repition are the key. Remember time takes time and so does improvement.
I am totally inconsistent right now. Before I took my extended hiatus from golf I could shoot mid eighties on almost any course. Now I have shot from the low eighties to 100. There are no quick fixes or substitutes for repitition. But that putter did feel good in the store!!
