Top Flite Clubs...good or bad for a beginner

I just started playing golf....took one lesson last weekend....
Now I have the gruesome task of selecting my first set of golf clubs. I am located in Canada. I don't really know how customs are charged, so I can't take advantage of the good deals I see on the American websites.
I am leaning towards this Top Flite XL 5000 women's set, comes with everything except bag and putter. It was $400CDN, now on sale for $250CDN. I can't seem to find review anywhere as it is only avaliable in GolfTown in Canada.
Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the clubs made by Top Flite. Good?! Bad?! One of the dilemma I am having is that this seem to be an in-between set. It's not cheap like a set of dunlop/wilson/etc that I can get at a big box store and it's not expensive like the big brand names. Good thing is that it's affordable. However, I am worried that the quality of the club is just as good as the inexpensive brand. What to do what to do?! Any suggestions?!

Hi all,
The lesson was great. I love it, but then again, it was just my first lesson. While I don't plan to quit golf anytime soon, I am a little hesitant to spend so much money. Part of the reason is that, if I spend alot of money on brand name stuff and I still suck, then I will have nothing to blame but myself!!
I agree with the used club idea. That's what I started with. But, I have been having a really hard time finding any used clubs for women, at stores and online. I am trying to avoid ebay, as I have been reading alot of stories about people selling fakes. Since I don't know much about golf clubs, I wouldn't even know if I am getting ripped off.

Yea, I am leaning towards the TopFlite set. This way I can get this shopping thing out of the way and spend more time thinking about my swing!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the site issey. Hard to say if that's a good set of clubs for you, but it sounds like it's not that expensive, so you should be okay. Top Flite isn't one of the cheap junk club makers you can find, so they should be okay. Have you looked at Pinemeadows for a set of irons? You might want to get a set of irons first, and then worry about woods later. Learning how to hit a set of irons well, is a great way to learn to play golf. Can be a lot better than trying to learn how to hit irons and woods at the same time. I think your golf instructor will second that advice. Any chance you can get the instructor's opinion on this set of clubs? He or she should be able to tell you if they would be a good set for you. I bet you could buy the set, take them to the instructor to look at, and take them back if he/she tells you the set is junk. Worth thinking about. Good luck in what ever you decide, and let us know what you do decide.

Issey, I think Don had a good point. I'll go further, and say you don't even need a full set of irons. I started golf two years ago, so I remember being a a complete beginner (as opposed to what I am now, a beginner). I didn't really need more than an 8 iron and a sand wedge (and a putter, and eventually a driver or a 3 wood) for the first year.
I'll try to explain myself. You can learn all about the short game with those two clubs, and learning the short game will not only help you score, it will help you get the full swing. It's more difficult to hit the longer irons, so it's easier to focus on the shorter irons first. I didn't really want to play much at first, but when I did, I think I remember using a 6i for my tee shots. At that time, I could hit it as far as anything else.
Where I live, I could get those clubs used for no more than $40 each. It may be harder to find ladies clubs. How athletic are you? How tall are you? I'm 5'7", and I have always used men's clubs. I started by using a men's regular set that I borrowed from my boyfriend. They were too stiff for me at the time, but they worked ok to get me started. Aimee (I think) and I both have some men's senior flex clubs in our bags, and there should be more of those out there. If you are shorter, you can get the shafts cut down in length for just a few dollars.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
Welcome to our forum and the most fascinating game I know... Laney

Laney makes a good point...when I started, having never played, I took lessons. For that lesson, they said to just bring a 9 iron. So I did buy a cheap used one, which was fine. Even now, having played for around 10 years, when I take lessons (for tune ups), my instructor makes me hit with wedges and short irons to groove the swing mechanics. I don't recommend a woman buying men's clubs as a beginner, because it is easier to learn with women's clubs (lighter swing weight, more flex) and move up if appropriate. If you start with something a little lighter and more forgiving, it will make the learning process more productive. I know someone who is a bit taller than average and she uses women's clubs, she just had the length extended 1/2". A professional can determine what is best for you, it's risky to self-diagnose (so to speak)!
