TaylorMade Review: r7 Quad Irons

Manufacturer: TaylorMade Golf

Details:

Purchase: Paid $799.00 at a Golf Mart store in Fremont, Ca. Have not purchased a new set of irons since 1976. Actually, those were used. Practically new set of Titleist AC 108's that a 10 handicapper sold to me for $50. Didn't take me long to figure out why. I doubt if Tiger Woods could shoot par with those things. Bottom line, I broke down and went out and spent the money on what I thought would be the best for my weary game.

Pros: Solid feel, high but penatrating trajectory, does not ballon, consistent distance, and relatively forgiving. The club sets up beautifully at address resulting in a fair amount of confidence. I found it interesting that even on the long irons you get a nice soft landing on the greens. On solid contact hits I have never seen or felt a better iron. Works wonders and flies beautifully through the air.

Cons: I tend to hit off of the toe occasionally. More occasionally than I would care to admit. The club does not perform quite up the the marketing hype about the perimeter weighting on balls hit off the toe. Not a bad performance but just not what the marketing may lead you to beleive. I guess a lesson or two might actually cure that situation. Can't expect the club to do everything!

r7 Quad Quality: Solidly built and grade "A" quality. No complaints in the least there.

Summary: Great game improvement club. Better than the Taylor Made's "OS II" but more expensive. Unfortunately I have talked to four different individuals in the golf industry that have been able to test the new r7 CGB Max irons. Without exception they are absolutely amazed with their performance. They conclusively say that as good as the r7 XD's are the CGB Max is even better and more forgiving off the toe due to the differnet way the are weighted. Oh well, what's a few more dollars? Golf Mart has a 90 day store credit policy. Can't really loose with that.

TaylorMade r7 Quad Rating: 5

Game: I've been playing on and off for years. I have never taken a lesson. Learned the game at 11 years old - was taught by a 12 year old. I guess that is why I still have a handicap index of 17 after all of these years.

Average Round: 90's
