Walter Hagen Review: SB5 Irons

Manufacturer: Walter Hagen Golf

Details: 5-PW Precsion Rifle 5.5 shafts. Also bought the gap wedge and sand wedge separately.

Purchase: Purchased at The Golf Shop, which is a golf specialty spin off of Dick's Sporting Goods. I paid $300.00 for the irons. The set is supposed to come with a 3 and 4 hybrid. I didn't want those as I already have a utility club that I like in that role, so the store removed them from the set and pro-rated the price down for just the irons.

Pros: These are excellent game improvement irons. Get the club head on the ball and they do the rest. Very easy to hit high, straight shots. I demo'd these in store against 2006 Big Bertha's and it wasn't even close. My previous irons were MacGregor M455, which are also excellent game improvement irons. I was so impressed with the SB5's I traded the Mac's for store credit to buy the Hagens. Love the vibration dampening features built into the clubs. Not being the best ball striker, I don't want to feel a lot of shock into my hands on mishits. These clubs feel great, perform great, and look great. What more is there? Oh yeah, there a fraction of the cost of callys, Taylors, or Pings. For the guy who's ticked that he can't find info on them, they're made by Nicklaus Golf, which is reputed to have some of the most very stringent production tolerance standards in the business. Have no worries that you were sold a bill of goods. These are quality clubs. I'm also Impressed that they come stock with Precision rifle shafts, which is a nice upgrade over stepped steel shafts.

Cons: No dislikes.

SB5 Quality: Quality is top notch, as good as any of the glamour name sets. Fit and finish are beautiful. Design is very sharp.

Summary: Overall very happy with the purchase, and with the way the store accommodated me in selling the set without the hybrids.

Walter Hagen SB5 Rating: 5
